The Punch has long been a hit in India. More than 8 lakh units of Punch have been sold so far, and it still ranks among the country's highest-selling vehicles. It received a facelift earlier this year, and now the updated model is available in South Africa. The company says it brings better technology, modern SUV styling, improved safety and more standard equipment.

    Design and cabin
Tata says the Punch has a bold and confident SUV design, inside and out. The cabin gets better tech and a more comfortable layout. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard across the range. Depending on the derivative, it gets an 8-inch display or a larger 10.25-inch HD Harman infotainment system. All derivatives get six airbags as standard. Tata says the Punch holds a five-star Bharat NCAP safety rating.

    Engines
The Punch has two petrol options. The first is a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine. It makes 65kW and 115Nm and comes with a five-speed manual gearbox. The second is a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine. It makes 88kW and 170Nm and comes with a six-speed manual gearbox.

This is the first time the Punch range in South Africa gets a turbocharged engine. Tata says it gives buyers more power and torque, and it widens the Punch’s appeal in the subcompact SUV segment.

    Official statement
Yash Khandelwal, Head, International Business, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., said, "Combining enhanced technology, higher levels of safety, contemporary styling and the capability to tackle varied terrains with its high ground clearance, the all-new Punch redefines what customers can expect from a sub-compact SUV. It brings together versatility, capability and everyday practicality in a compact footprint, making it an ideal proposition for customers in South Africa."
