The Bombay High Court on Monday deferred the hearing on actor Imran Khan’s writ petition challenging the Foreigners Regional Registration Office’s (FRRO) ‘Leave India’ notice to November 2 at 3:00 PM, after the Centre requested additional time to file its response.

The division bench comprised Chief Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi and Justice Advait Sethna. Crucially, the court directed that the FRRO order be kept in abeyance in the interim, ensuring that no coercive action or deportation steps will be initiated against the actor before the next hearing. The ruling provides immediate relief to Khan, whose exit deadline was originally set for Tuesday, October 28.

Oral assurance in court: 'Nothing will happen'

During the proceedings, senior advocate Venkatesh Dhond, representing Imran Khan, highlighted the urgency of the petition, noting, "But I have to leave tomorrow."

Responding to the court on behalf of the government, the law officer assured the bench that the matter could be safely listed for the following Monday, stating, "Nothing will happen. That is an oral assurance." Taking note of the Centre's commitment, the bench ordered the notice to remain suspended until the matter is heard next week.

Origin of the dispute: Detained during Mumbai protest

The legal battle stems from an incident on October 10, when Mumbai Police detained Imran Khan near August Kranti Maidan during a public protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Khan’s partner, Lekha Washington, and cousin, Zayn Marie Khan, were also detained during the demonstration.

Four days later, on October 14, the FRRO issued a Leave India Notice (LIN) directing the actor—who holds US citizenship alongside an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card—to leave the country by October 28 under Sections 7(2)(C) and 29 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.

Imran Khan challenges notice as arbitrary violation of rights

In response to the FRRO directive, Khan filed a writ petition titled Imran Khan Pal v. Furthermore, Khan’s counsel questioned the procedure followed by the authorities, pointing out that the actor was denied a prior hearing or a fair opportunity to respond via a standard show-cause notice before the order was issued.

Known for his breakout debut in Jaane Tu...
Ahead of its nationwide theatrical release on October 30, 2026, National Award-winning filmmaker Vinod Kapri’s feature film Pyre has already forged a deeply emotional connection across the globe. Cinema is a source of comfort for many viewers. Knowing that lead actress Hira Devi pushed for a gentler ending in Pyre, why did you decide against it?

"I completely understood why Hira ji wanted a gentler ending. She was living the story in her own way, and perhaps, like most of us, she wanted life to be kinder to her characters. But I felt that giving the audience comfort at the cost of the story’s truth would be unfair to the film and to the people whose lives inspired it.

Pyre is rooted in the realities of a dying Himalayan village, where people are left behind, families disappear, and old age can be incredibly lonely. I didn’t want to manufacture hope simply because it would make the ending easier to accept. Sometimes, the most honest stories are also the most painful. And I believe cinema must have the courage to let us sit with that pain."

Q2. How did working with first-time actors like Padam Singh and Hira Devi shape your directing style?

"It changed my understanding of directing. Padam Singh ji and Hira ji were not trained actors. They had never faced a camera before. They brought their own lives, habits, silences and experiences to the film. My job was not to teach them how to act, but to ensure that the camera did not take away their naturalness.

Anup Trivedi, an actor trained at the National School of Drama (NSD), was instrumental in preparing and coaching them. His contribution was very important in helping these first-time performers feel comfortable and find their way into the world of the film. But once we were on set, I was careful not to let that preparation turn into something artificial.

I had to unlearn a lot of what we conventionally understand as acting. Sometimes, a pause or a glance told me more than a perfectly delivered line ever could. I tried to create an environment where they felt safe enough to be themselves, rather than perform what I wanted them to be.

The biggest lesson was that authenticity cannot be manufactured. You can direct a performance, but you cannot manufacture a lifetime of lived experience. With Padam Singh ji and Hira ji, that experience was already there."

Q3. You initially considered casting veteran actors like Naseeruddin Shah for Pyre. How would the film’s emotional weight and texture have shifted if seasoned stars played these roles instead of real-life villagers?

"I have enormous respect for Naseeruddin Shah. In fact, the idea of considering actors from the Himalayas rather than established performers was something Naseer sahab himself encouraged.

When I struggled to find the right actors from the Himalayan region, I eventually decided to approach Naseer sahab.

During our conversations, he suggested that if I could find people from the Himalayas themselves, the film might feel rawer and more authentic. I took his advice very seriously because I respect him enormously.

That advice stayed with me, and I continued looking until I found Padam Singh ji and Hira ji

Also Read | Ramayana advance booking: Ranbir Kapoor film earns Rs 13.30 cr in India pre-sales

Pyre needed something very specific. I was looking for faces that carried the geography, the weather and the history of the mountains within them. Padam Singh ji and Hira ji had lived the kind of lives that the film was trying to capture. Their bodies, their silences, their way of walking and looking at each other came from decades of living together, not from an actor’s preparation.

A trained actor might have created a remarkable interpretation of these characters. But the texture would inevitably have been different. With Padam Singh ji and Hira ji, there was no visible distance between the people on screen and the lives they were portraying. That gave the film a particular kind of intimacy and unpredictability.

For me, the greatest achievement was not that two non-actors performed well. It was that they allowed us to forget the idea of performance altogether."

Q4. The film has won numerous international awards before its commercial theatrical release. Did foreign audiences connect with the core themes of Pyre differently than Indian viewers?

"What has moved me most is how consistently audiences across cultures have responded to the film’s emotional core. Pyre comes from a very specific place in the Kumaon Himalayas, and its landscape, language and social realities are deeply rooted in that region. Yet audiences in Europe, North America and Asia have connected with its themes of love, loneliness, ageing and waiting.

I have noticed that viewers sometimes bring different experiences to the film, depending on their own cultures and lives. But the emotions themselves don’t seem to need translation. The relationship between an elderly couple, the fear of being forgotten, and the longing for someone who may never return are not uniquely Indian experiences.

I would be careful about saying that foreign audiences understand the film differently or respond more strongly than Indian audiences. Every audience is different. I am particularly curious to see how people in India respond when the film opens in cinemas, because the story belongs to our own landscape and to a reality that many of us may have encountered without really stopping to look at it.

Ultimately, the awards are encouraging, but what matters most to me is whether the film stays with someone after they leave the theatre. If it makes them think about their parents, their grandparents, or an elderly couple in a forgotten village, then I feel the film has done something meaningful."

PYRE releases in Indian cinemas on 30 October 2026.

Hyderabad: Amid the ongoing trolling over their appearance on 'Koffee With Karan', Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna’s team have filed a formal complaint with the Hyderabad Cyber Crime authorities, seeking an impartial investigation into specific online content targeting them.
The complaint identifies online publications and digital material across social media platforms, including alleged false narratives, fabricated content, manipulated screenshots, impersonation and targeted online harassment. Relevant links and supporting evidence have been submitted for examination by the authorities.
The couple's team hopes "the matter will be investigated in accordance with the law and that the deliberate creation and circulation of misleading narratives, including any coordinated or paid campaigns established through evidence, will be addressed appropriately."
"Every identified instance of publishing, reposting or amplifying potentially unlawful content may be examined on its own merits. Appropriate legal remedies will be pursued wherever warranted, in accordance with due process," read a statement by Vijay's team.
However, an official confirmation from the police regarding the matter is still awaited.
Earlier, on Monday afternoon, both Rashmika and Vijay took to their respective Instagram accounts to call out the trolls.
"My best friend, my wife, my woman. One of the most beautiful parts of my life that I got absolutely right. For all those concerned, We are both gloriously happy. I am blessed. If its me and her against the world - so be it. Big love to all those who celebrate love and the simplicity of living happily. Now, with absolutely no intended kindness or respect, everyone else can go fuck themselves," Vijay's post read.
Since the episode aired last week, the couple has been facing severe online trolling over several revelations they made about their relationship.
Several clips from the episode circulated online, evoking mixed reactions from the netizens. One of the moments that drew particular attention was Vijay’s revelation that Rashmika had to propose to him nearly 100 times before he agreed to marry her.Reacting to this, many social media users labelled Vijay “red flag".
Before Vijay, Rashmika took to Instagram to respond to the ongoing controversy.
“My lil’ 2 cents on this whole issue concerning me and Vijju. I generally don’t address these things because everyone has a right to their opinions. Sometimes, I even enjoy reading them and gaining a different perspective. But the current frenzy over our interview feels less like people having opinions and more like an angry mob looking for someone to vent at. Somewhere along the way, the whole point got lost. Maybe it didn’t fit your lens. Maybe some of you simply don’t want to see it. I’m writing this because I want to protect the people who believe in love, and I hope everyone gets to find their own version of it,” she posted.
“We’ve been bombarded with opinions, comments and unsolicited advice on all our profiles, mine and yours, unnecessarily. The conviction with which people came at us genuinely shook me a little. I was like, WHAT THE FK IS GOING ON? So I took a step back, thought about it, and here’s my lil’ take on my own life. First, it was never about the number of times or an entire year. That’s where some of you got stuck. Yes, that conversation happened. But neither of us was looking for a grand proposal. The conversation was about him wanting both of us to take the time and space to understand each other, to be sure that despite all the highs and lows, the joys and stresses of life, this was what we wanted and the right time for it.And we did. We chose each other. It’s okay that I knew exactly what I wanted. And it was equally okay that he wanted time to think all the practical things of life through and be sure. That didn’t change our love in any way. I am all heart and he is the thinker- and we need that in each other’s lives. For us, marriage was never about a proposal, getting down on one knee or putting a ring on a finger. That’s the decorative part. For us, it was about building a life and a future together. And I think we did that beautifully so far,” she added.
Rashmika also questioned how being obsessed with someone you love could ever be a bad thing, proudly admitting that she’s obsessed with Vijay.
“Find someone you would go to any lengths for, someone who would do the same for you. And yes, I am OBSESSED with my man. When did that become a bad thing? If I’m not IN LOVE with the man I’m marrying, then why in the world would I marry him? He’s going to be my companion for life. My friend through the ordinary days and the extraordinary ones. The father of my children. The man I grow old with. Find a man who loves you so beautifully that even after you’re married, you’d still want to tell him, ‘Let’s get married.’ I would do it a thousand times – 100 is nothing. It’s really that simple,” she wrote.
Rashmika urged everyone to refrain from speaking ill of her or her family, making it clear that she wouldn’t tolerate any disrespect towards them.
“Bitch about me all you want. I can take it. But talking about my family without knowing them? That’s not feminism. That’s bullying dressed up as feminism. Feminism was never about putting someone else down or establishing superiority, whether you’re a man or a woman. It was always about having the freedom to choose your own life and taking charge of it. I took charge of mine,” she expressed. In her note,
Rashmika also opened up about how Vijay has always been by her side through thick and thin.
“Right now, I am the happiest I have ever been. And I hope you can see that in my face, in the joy I’ve felt since getting married, in my performances, in my films, and simply in the way I live my life.I am happy. I am content. I am blessed. And the fact that some people would rather believe random narratives, misleading edits and absolute lies created on the internet that believe what I say about my own life is honestly a little creepy. When I snap a bone, you aren’t there. He is. When my stomach hurts every month, you aren’t there. He is. When I need to go to the hospital, you aren’t there. He is. When I wake up in the middle of the night with anxiety, you aren’t there. He is. And when I break down, I don’t have your shoulder to cry on. I have his. So please, don’t worry about me or him. I genuinely wish and pray that you find someone you love who loves you just as deeply. And if that isn’t what you want for yourself, that’s completely fine too. Live the life that makes you happy,” she said.
Rashmika concluded her note with a shout-out to her fans who have always loved her and supported her.
“And it rewarded me with immense love ….And to some of my Kannadiga friends… Ahhh, how lovely it is to know that I’m still so deeply etched in your hearts even after 10 years. For you to still be celebrating me after all this time… truly, I’m blessed! Love to all those who celebrate love and joy. And to everyone else… please find something that makes you happy, too,” she signed off.
Rashmika and Vijay tied the knot in Udaipur on February 26, 2026.

The petition challenges the procedure the FRRO adopted. The FRRO concluded that Imran, a US National, had taken part in a protest, and on that basis ordered him to leave India. It did so without giving him any opportunity of being heard."
The actor’s petition argues that the notice does not specify the provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, that he allegedly violated.
Kolkata: Eminent painter Jogen Chowdhury passed away at a private hospital in Kolkata on Sunday morning following a prolonged battle with a rare blood cancer at the age of 87 years.
Apart from being a painter, Jogen was also a former Member of Parliament (MP), representing the Trinamool Congress (TMC). He had been suffering from a myeloproliferative neoplasm, a rare type of blood cancer, for the past 14 months and was undergoing chemotherapy, Ruby General Hospital said in a statement.
Jogen's wife, Sipra Chowdhury, paid her last respects to the mortal remains of the painter after the body was transferred from Ruby General Hospital.
The brother of Jogen Chowdhury, Manindranath Choudhuri, expressed his sorrow after the demise of his brother. He shared the love of Jogen for paintings and art.
While sharing his remorse, Manindranath said, "I can't believe Jogen Chowdhury will be leaving like this. He had a lot of dreams—always wanting to organise things since he was a kid, and just the way he is. So suddenly getting a disease like this was beyond our imagination. We never thought it would happen. We argued a lot with the doctor about why this was happening and what was going on. We asked if there was any possible treatment. But they couldn't do anything."
He continued, "I've grown up doing cultural programs, running the cultural club, and things like that. He still wants to do a bit more, maybe. There are already three organisations right here in Charubasna. Then we have our Nandimukh Sansad. We're always doing some kind of creative stuff. We don't even have enough time for painting. Ever since childhood, he had an overly ambitious desire to do everything."
Wife Sipra Chowdhury was at a loss of words following her husband's demise. She called it a painful moment of her life. While talking to ANI, she said, "It's very painful for me. We got married in 1970. We worked together for a long time."
Artist Samir Aich, who arrived to pay his last respects to Jogen, described the painter's demise as a "shock to India." He paid tribute to the painter by remembering the legacy of Jogen's works, which will continue to inspire his students and followers.
While talking to ANI, Samir Aich said, "This shock is not just for me, but for the whole of India and Bengal. We have to see days like this. This is a part of life, but it's really hard to bear. Jogen was one of the most important artists in modern painting in India. Such a good painter and a good artist. It's a loss for us. It's very hard to fill this void. This is a very sad thing for so many of us."
He added, "Jogen has so many students, he takes so many modern classes, and he has so many paintings. Look, many of their paintings are in a museum in Japan. They have many paintings. He has a museum in Kiran Nadar. But all over the world, many collectors have his paintings. We also have some that will remain. Jagendra Choudhury is no more today, but it's true that his paintings will remain in the world forever."
Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari expressed his sorrow on the passing of Jogen Chowdhury on Sunday. Initially, they had been placed on a three-day transit remand. During that transit remand, they were subjected to extensive interrogation. Furthermore, the police requested an extension of their custody from today until the 31st. However, all relevant items, including their mobile phones, SIM cards, and bank debit cards, have already been recovered. So, the question arises: why would the police require further custody? That was the core of our argument today. The court has remanded them until the 28th. Citing their direct involvement in executing the conspiracy, the police sought their custodial interrogation.
Appearing for the state, Public Prosecutor Kranti Kumbhar pushed for an extended remand till October 31, arguing that several wanted individuals linked to the case are currently outside Maharashtra, requiring inter-state investigation.
"Most of the wanted accused connected to the present accused are out of state, and this needs a thorough investigation, which is a time-taking process. The hotel register has also been seized, but further investigation is needed on all these aspects. As we all know, it is a case of conspiracy and conspiracy is hatched in secrecy, so this needs to be investigated in detail. Therefore, a longer duration is a must in this case," the Public Prosecutor argued.
Opposing the police remand, defence counsel Ajinkya Mirgal pressed for judicial custody, contending that the police had already completed their recoveries and had no substantial ground to demand extended custody.
Speaking to the media after the hearing, Advocate Mirgal said, "According to the police's own submission, they have already seized the hotel registers, the crime scene footage, and the CCTV recordings showing our clients were not present at the spot. They also claim to have recovered the empty cartridges from the alleged misfire during practice at the hotel. If all recoveries have already been completed, why is police custody required on the exact same grounds?"The defence counsel also questioned the claims regarding the alleged weapon. "To our knowledge, no weapon has been recovered so far. Despite making around ten arrests, if they are still unable to recover the weapon, it raises serious doubts about whether such a weapon actually exists," Mirgal said.
Addressing the police's claim that two of the accused were in phone contact with wanted accused Anil Pandit, Mirgal argued that since the mobile phones of the accused have already been seized, forensic experts can independently verify call detail records without requiring custodial interrogation.
He also argued that taking them back to Sonipat until October 31 was unwarranted when they were just brought to Mumbai from there within 48 hours.
Mumbai: Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna’s recent appearance on the ninth season of ‘Koffee With Karan’ has not gone down well with a section of social media users. Since the episode aired last week, the couple has been facing severe online trolling over several revelations they made about their relationship.
Several clips from the episode circulated online, evoking mixed reactions from the netizens. One of the moments that drew particular attention was Vijay’s revelation that Rashmika had to propose to him nearly 100 times before he agreed to marry her.
Reacting to this, many social media users labelled Vijay “red flag.”
Amid the ongoing controversy, Rashmika on Monday penned a lengthy note, calling out the trolls in a dignified way.
She emphasised that their decision to marry was never about a grand proposal or a timeline, but about consciously choosing to build a life together.
Find a man who loves you so beautifully that even after you’re married, you’d still want to tell him, ‘Let’s get married.’ I would do it a thousand times- 100 is nothing.
In her note, Rashmika also opened up about how Vijay has always been by her side through thick and thin.
Rashmika concluded her note with a shout out to her fans who have always loved her and supported her.
Rashmika and Vijay tied the knot in Udaipur on February 26, 2026
