As India emerges as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, the nation is simultaneously confronting a sharp rise in natural disasters, escalating healthcare costs, and expanding financial aspirations. Every flood, cyclone, health emergency, or financial disruption reminds us of a simple truth: India’s progress is only as resilient as its people’s ability to protect what they are building. In a country where millions remain vulnerable to sudden financial shocks, understanding insurance is indispensable for securing a stable future.

India is among the world’s most disaster-prone nations, with nearly 27A of its states and union territories exposed to major natural hazards including floods, cyclones, earthquakes, and droughts. The financial impact of these events has been rising steadily as natural catastrophes cost India over USD 12 billion in economic losses every year, and floods alone account for ~63%B of annual disaster-related losses, making them one of the largest contributors to financial damage. As climate events intensify, families face heightened vulnerability, especially those without adequate insurance coverage. Further, rising medical inflation adds another layer of risk as a single hospitalisation today can strain household finances, while critical illnesses multiply this burden significantly.

Yet despite growing risks, India remains severely underinsured, with non-life insurance penetration at barely ~1%C. Awareness gaps, affordability concerns, misconceptions, and limited understanding of policy coverage continue to hinder adoption and leave many citizens financially exposed.

This is where insurance awareness becomes transformational. An informed individual understands what insurance covers, how claims work, and why timely purchase matters. Awareness empowers families to choose protection based on real needs rather than assumptions as they avoid underinsurance, understand exclusions, and secure adequate cover for themselves, their loved ones, and their important assets. On a larger scale, insurance awareness also strengthens India’s financial resilience. When households and businesses are protected, they recover faster from disasters, supporting stable economic activity, steady consumption, and reduced long-term fiscal pressure on the nation.

Aligned with this mission, HDFC ERGO General Insurance, India’s leading private sector general insurer, has spent a decade nurturing early insurance understanding through its flagship initiative, Insurance Quiz Junior, designed for 8th and 9th-grade students. What began in 2016 with 18 schools has grown into a nationwide movement reaching nearly 3 million young learners. In 2026, the initiative expanded further, engaging 16,900 students from 4,850 schools across 28 states and 8 union territories. Conducted in 10 languages and covering 76 percent of India’s districts, it has become one of the country’s largest and most inclusive school-based financial awareness programmes, embedding insurance literacy among India’s future decision-makers.

Empowered and informed citizens are essential for India to achieve its long-term vision of a resilient and universally insured economy. For a young nation where more than half of India’s population is under 35, building insurance awareness today will directly shape the financial behaviour of tomorrow’s workforce.

Ultimately, insurance awareness is not merely about policies as it is about strengthening India’s resilience. When citizens understand how to safeguard their health, homes, and livelihoods, the country becomes better prepared to face disruptions and continue its growth journey with stability and confidence.
