Dialogue of the day from Ramayan, ‘Satya akela ho toh bhi...’

Dialogue of the day: Sita is a captive in Ravan’s Lanka, with no army, no weapons and no one beside her. Ravan has everything else. Her answer to him is one of the strongest speeches in the world, and it is a good one to read on the day of Diwali.

Dialogue of the day: In Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan, Ravan is proud of his powers, boons and army, and he expects Sita to be afraid. Instead, she turns the argument around. She tells him that the very powers he is boasting about have been corrupted by his own sins, and that power which has lost its way no longer has any real strength. Then she ends with the line below.

Dialogue of the Day

"सत्य अकेला हो तो भी भ्रष्ट शक्तियों की अपार सेना उसके सामने पराजित हो जाती है।" (Even if truth stands alone, a vast army of corrupt power is defeated before it.) - Sita, Ramayan (1987)

What does the dialogue mean?

Ravan has the army, the fortress and the boons. Sita has nothing but her conviction. Her line says that this is enough, because strength built on wrongdoing is hollow, however big it looks.

The idea behind it is simple. Power and rightness are not the same thing. Ravan assumes that because he can command so much, he must be in the stronger position. Sita points out that power taken from a corrupt purpose loses its force. It looks impressive from the outside, but it cannot hold when it meets the truth.

It also says something about how a lone person can face a huge force. Sita is not threatening Ravan or pleading with him. She is calmly telling him how this ends. That quiet certainty is why the line has stayed with viewers for decades.

That is what ties it to Diwali. The festival marks the return of Ram to Ayodhya after Ravan’s defeat, and the lamps stand for the idea that darkness, however vast, does not outlast a single light. Sita’s line says the same thing in words. It is a good reminder that being outnumbered or outpowered does not mean being in the wrong, or that you will lose.
