India’s homegrown navigation system NavIC has regained its footing, with the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) NVS-03 satellite reaching its designated geosynchronous slot at 111.75 degrees East. The development is expected to strengthen India's independent navigation capabilities and improve the reliability of location and timing services.

ISRO launched the NVS-03 satellite aboard its Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F18) rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on October 30, 2026.

Following the launch, the satellite underwent a series of orbit-raising manoeuvres before reaching its intended orbital position.

NVS-03 is the third satellite in India's second-generation NavIC series, which aims to improve the performance and continuity of the country's regional navigation system.

The satellite carries advanced navigation payloads operating in L1, L5 and S bands, strengthening the system's capabilities and compatibility with civilian navigation devices.

What is NavIC and how does it work?

NavIC is India's home-grown alternative to the United States' Global Positioning System (GPS). Developed by ISRO, the regional navigation system provides positioning, navigation and timing services across the Indian mainland and approximately 1,500 km beyond the country's boundaries.

The system has applications in road transportation, railways, maritime navigation, agriculture, disaster management and telecommunications.

It can also support vehicle tracking, emergency response and other location-based services.

Unlike GPS, which offers global coverage, NavIC is primarily designed to serve India and its neighbouring region.

Having an indigenous navigation system also reduces India's dependence on foreign satellite infrastructure for critical services.

The NVS-03 mission is part of ISRO's broader effort to strengthen NavIC through a second-generation constellation of five satellites.

Its successful deployment marks another important step towards improving India's self-reliance in satellite-based navigation technology.
