Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have initiated an extensive restructuring of their backroom setup ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season, parting ways with long-standing batting coach Michael Hussey and bowling coach Eric Simons.
The decision marks the end of a pivotal chapter in the franchise’s history, as CSK seek to recalibrate their tactical core following challenging campaigns in the last three IPL seasons.

A Storied Association Concludes
Hussey’s connection with the Super Kings dates back to the league’s inaugural edition in 2008. After an impactful playing stint featuring a century on debut and playing key roles in CSK’s early championship runs, the former Australian batter transitioned into the role of batting coach in 2018. Under his stewardship, CSK claimed IPL trophies in 2018, 2021, and 2023.
In an official statement paying tribute to Hussey, Chennai Super Kings acknowledged his deep-rooted legacy.
"From the very first season in 2008, you have been an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings family.
Your journey in Yellow has been defined not just by the runs you scored and the players you mentored, but by the dedication, humility, and unwavering commitment you brought to this franchise over the years. Your place in our history will forever remain special, Hussmeister," the CSK said.
"Once a Super King, always a Super King," it added.
Alongside Hussey, former South African pacer and coach Eric Simons also bids farewell.
Simons served as a cornerstone of CSK’s bowling department for over a decade, functioning as a primary strategist for both pace execution and tactical fielding placements under pressure.
"An integral part of the Chennai Super Kings coaching setup since 2018, Eric Simons has played an important role in shaping our bowling unit and contributing to the team's success over the years.
We extend our sincere gratitude for your dedicated service and contributions. Thank you, Eric Simons. Wishing you the very best in your future endeavours," the CSK said in a statement.
Wider Backroom Departures
The overhaul extends across the wider coaching unit:
Michael Hussey (Batting Coach)
Eric Simons (Bowling Coach)
Rajiv Kumar (Assistant Coach)
Greg King (Head of S&C)
Tommy Simsek (Physiotherapist)
Meanwhile, the future of fielding coach James Foster (who joined more recently) remained uncertain at the time of the initial reports, with a decision on any extension deferred.
Incoming Appointments And Tactical Reset
CSK have already begun filling key vacancies to spearhead their rebuild:
The sweeping reset follows three consecutive seasons in which the five-time champions CSK missed out on top four qualification, finishing fifth in 2024, tenth in 2025, and eighth in 2026.
With an eye on modernizing match plans and refreshing dugout dynamics, CSK’s leadership has set a decisive new direction as preparations for the 2027 season get underway.
