Veteran Australian fast bowler Megan Schutt received a two-match suspension from Cricket Australia (CA) for breaching internal protocol regarding prescription medication.
The sanction sidelines the 33-year-old Schutt across both international and domestic fixtures, impacting Australia's home series as well as the opening week of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).
Nature Of Violation
According to Cricket Australia's statement, Schutt failed to comply with specific procedural requirements outlined in the board's Sports Science and Sports Medicine (SSSM) guidelines concerning prescription medication.
Under elite sporting guidelines, contracted athletes must obtain formal clearance, proper documentation, or therapeutic use exemptions (TUEs) through official medical channels when using prescribed substances to avoid anti-doping and safety complications.
CA outlined key mitigating factors regarding the breach:
Out-of-competition occurrence: The breach involved a single isolated incident that took place while Schutt was outside active match play.
Not performance-enhancing: The governing body confirmed that the medication was taken for personal medical reasons and was not intended to, nor did it, provide any performance-enhancing advantage.
Integrity of competition intact: Because it was handled as an administrative compliance issue under SSSM protocols rather than a direct anti-doping rule violation (ADRV) involving banned performance enhancers, the penalty remained a short internal suspension.
Matches Missed
Because the suspension applies across CA-sanctioned cricket at both international and domestic levels, Schutt serves the ban across two specific fixtures:
Australia vs New Zealand (3rd T20I): The final match of the T20I series at North Sydney Oval.
Adelaide Strikers vs Melbourne Stars: The Strikers’ opening fixture of WBBL season on October 31.
Official Statements From CA, Megan Schutt
In a statement, Cricket Australia confirmed the suspension and also mentioned that it would continue to provide appropriate support to Megan Schutt and reinforce the standards and responsibilities expected of everyone representing the game.
"Australian player Megan Schutt has been suspended for two matches. The breach was a failure to adhere to requirements under the Sports Science and Sports Medicine guidelines with regard to prescription medication," Cricket Australia said in a statement.
"This relates to a single incidence which occurred while out of competition and was not for performance enhancing purposes. The two-match ban includes all international and domestic cricket.
We will continue to provide appropriate support to Megan and reinforce the standards and responsibilities expected of everyone representing our game," it added.
On the other hand, Schutt accepted the ban immediately and released her own statement to confirm.
"I fully accept the penalty handed down and apologise for failing to meet the standards expected of me. I'm sorry for the attention this has caused and appreciate the support I've received," Schutt said.
"While this occurred out of competition and was not performance related, I understand that I am responsible for following the Sports Science and Sports Medicine Guidelines, which players receive regular education on, and I should have adhered to these guidelines."
With more than 240 international appearances for Australia and multiple World Cup titles to her name, Schutt remains one of the most decorated seamers in women's cricket. She is slated to return to action immediately following the Adelaide Strikers' opening WBBL clash.
