Michael Hussey joins Australia coaching staff after CSK exit to guide team for 2027 Ashes and ODI World Cup

Former Australia batter Michael Hussey is set to take up a bigger role in the country's cricket setup after being appointed as a coaching consultant for the 2027 Ashes and the 2027 ODI World Cup. Cricket Australia has also named the former left-hander as a T20 advisor for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the upcoming T20 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

Hussey has previously worked with the Australian team on short-term assignments under head coach Andrew McDonald. However, his latest appointment will see him become a more regular part of the national coaching setup as Australia prepare for a busy international calendar.

The former cricketer is expected to bring his experience across different formats and franchise competitions to the Australian dressing room. His new responsibilities will cover some of the biggest tournaments on the international cricket calendar over the next few years.

Michael Hussey to begin Australia coaching role against England

Hussey will begin his new assignment during Australia's upcoming T20 International series against England. He will then be involved in the team's preparations for the Test series against New Zealand in Perth.

According to reports, Hussey's previous commitments with Welsh Fire in The Hundred, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and his commentary work had limited his involvement with the Australian side.

There had also been discussions about him joining the England coaching setup under former CSK coach Stephen Fleming. However, Hussey opted to take up a more formal consulting position with Australia.

Speaking about his appointment, Hussey expressed his excitement about working more closely with the national team in the coming years. "I am extremely excited about being a part of the team in a more formal and meaningful role in the coming years. This team has achieved so much in recent times, to which I hope I can add value to the coaching and playing groups ahead of what will be an exciting and challenging period," Hussey said.

Andrew McDonald welcomes Michael Hussey's appointment

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald also welcomed Hussey's addition to the coaching group, highlighting the experience and knowledge he brings to the team. "Mike has been a highly valued part of our staff in the past and brings a considerable skill set which is complementary to the coaches and players. Not only is his expertise as a player and coach across multiple formats, competitions, and countries invaluable, but so are his qualities as a person," McDonald said.

Hussey's experience in international and franchise cricket is expected to be valuable as Australia prepare for the 2027 Ashes, the ODI World Cup and the T20 competitions scheduled over the next two years.

The former left-handed batter has also worked in coaching roles across franchise cricket and international teams. He was part of England's coaching staff during their successful 2022 T20 World Cup campaign under Matthew Mott.

Andre Borovec to lead Australia against England

Meanwhile, McDonald will not be part of Australia's coaching setup for the upcoming T20I series against England. Assistant coach Andre Borovec is set to take charge of the team during the series.

Australia have used a similar arrangement in several T20 assignments over the past three years, with Borovec stepping into the head coach's responsibilities whenever McDonald has been unavailable.

Hussey's appointment comes at an important stage for Australian cricket, with the team preparing for multiple major tournaments across formats. His role as a consultant and T20 advisor is expected to provide additional support to the coaching group as Australia look to prepare for the challenges ahead.
