Mandeep Singh scored a hat-trick, while Harmanpreet Singh, Dilpreet Singh and Hardik Singh scored twice each as the Indian men's hockey team began the title defence at the Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026 with a commanding 13-0 win over Bangladesh at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar on Tuesday.Mandeep Singh completed his hat-trick in the 3rd, 10th and 54th minutes, while captain Harmanpreet Singh (2', 44'), Dilpreet Singh (43', 44') and Hardik Singh (60', 60') scored twice each. Shilanand Lakra (15'), Abhishek (18'), Nilakanta Sharma (26') and Jugraj Singh (46') were the other goalscorers for India. The evening ended on an emotional note as Nilakanta announced his retirement from international hockey, marking this tournament as his last appearance in the India jersey.India started strong and earned a penalty corner in the second minute, which Harmanpreet converted with a drag-flick to open the scoring. A minute later, Mandeep collected a pass from Harmanpreet at the top of the circle and found the net with a reverse-hit to double India's lead. Bangladesh had a chance in the fourth minute, but Lakra cleared the ball. Mandeep scored again in the 10th minute, finishing from close range after Harmanpreet's aerial ball found Abhishek, who played it into the circle. Lakra added the fourth goal in the 15th minute following a move involving Sukhjeet Singh and Aditya Arjun Lalage.India continued their attacking play in the second quarter, with Abhishek making it 5-0 in the 18th minute after receiving a pass from Mandeep on the left and finding space inside the circle. Nilakanta added another in the 26th minute with a reverse-stick shot from the top of the circle.Bangladesh goalkeeper Ashraful Shad made a fine save against Nilakanta earlier in the quarter, but India went into half-time with a comfortable 6-0 lead.Bangladesh managed to hold the ball for longer spells in the third quarter, but India continued to create chances. Dilpreet converted a penalty corner in the 43rd minute before scoring again from open play a minute later. Harmanpreet then converted another penalty corner in the 44th minute to take India's lead to 9-0.India added another in the first minute of the final quarter, with Jugraj converting a penalty corner in the 46th minute. Mandeep completed his hat-trick in the 54th minute, stretching to turn in a cross from Aditya.India kept looking for more goals in the closing stages. Hardik scored his first goal in the 60th minute after Bangladesh managed to block a PC. Hardik then scored again moments later, finishing a move that began with Harmanpreet's pass to Dilpreet, who laid the ball off for Hardik to guide it into the net as India completed the 13-0 win with the passionate supporters waving the Indian tricolour in the stands. The match was preceded by a glittering opening ceremony, marking the return of international hockey to Punjab. Hon’ble Chief Minister of Punjab, Bhagwant Mann, unveiled the Hero Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026 trophy and was felicitated by Bhola Nath Singh, Vice President, Asian Hockey Federation and Secretary General, Hockey India, and Nitin Kohli, President, Hockey Punjab and Associate Vice President, Hockey India. The ceremony featured traditional Punjabi dance forms Bhangra and Giddha, along with performances by exponents of Gatka, the Sikh martial art. Punjabi singer Ninja also performed, while a musical performance and fireworks added to the celebrations as Jalandhar welcomed Asia’s leading hockey teams. In the other matches on the opening day, Malaysia beat China 5-4, while Japan defeated South Korea 3-2. India finished the first day at the top of the standings with three points and a goal difference of +13.The six-team tournament follows a single round-robin format, with each team playing the other five sides once. The top four teams at the end of the league stage will qualify for the semi-finals.India will next face China on October 29 at 1900 IST. October 28 is a rest day in the league-stage schedule. All league matches will be played in Jalandhar until November 2, before the tournament moves to the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium in Mohali for the semi-finals on November 4 and the bronze-medal and gold-medal matches on November 5.

India's campaign at the Men's Hockey Asian Champions Trophy 2026 has been dealt a severe setback, with veteran midfielder and former captain Manpreet Singh officially ruled out of the tournament due to a calf muscle injury. The news was confirmed by India captain Harmanpreet Singh at the captains' press conference in Jalandhar, a day before the hosts open their campaign against Bangladesh on Tuesday.Vivek Sagar Prasad has been named as the replacement in the squad. The midfielder, who has established himself as a reliable presence in the Indian midfield, steps in for the veteran as India look to defend their title on home soil. ALSO READ: IPL 2027 auction set for December 16 in Goa; Retention deadline fixed for November 15A Heartbreak On Home TurfThe injury robs Manpreet of a historic personal milestone. Having debuted at the tournament's inaugural edition in Ordos in 2011, the 34-year-old Manpreet was set to become the first hockey player in Asian history to compete across eight separate editions of the Asian Champions Trophy. Even more poignant is the venue. With the tournament hosted in Punjab, Manpreet was scheduled to play before his home crowd. "It is a huge disappointment. It was a big opportunity to play on my home ground, but now I won’t be playing. This is where I started playing hockey, and I was so excited. But I don’t know when this opportunity will come my way again," Manpreet told The Tribune.Between his senior India debut in 2011 and coming October 27, Manpreet played 430 matches, won two Olympic medals and became a three-time Asian Games gold medallist, but never got a chance to play in front of fans in his home state - Punjab. India's Midfield ReshuffleManpreet's absence leaves an enormous tactical gap. Renowned for his positional intelligence, relentless engine, and ability to break down transitional play, the two-time Olympic bronze medallist remains one of India's most capped and influential figures on the turf. With Manpreet sidelined, greater defensive and organizing responsibility falls on the shoulders of Vivek Sagar Prasad and the young core of India’s midfield.Five-time champions India now face an uphill task to quickly recalibrate their structure as they mount their title defense on home soil.India will play their opening league match on October 27 against Bangladesh, followed by games against China (October 29), Japan (October 30), Malaysia (November 1) and South Korea (November 2).

While the Indian team was scripting Asian Games history in Japan, Krishan Bahadur Pathak was fine-tuning his goalkeeping skills in Bengaluru, working hard for a return to the national colours. The icing on the cake: he will be playing on home soil in Punjab.Pathak has been included in the 18-member India squad, replacing Mohith HS for the October 27 to November 5 tournament to be held in Jalandhar and Mohali. The venue in Jalandhar - Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium - is also home to the Surjit Hockey Academy where Pathak grew up learning the sport."What makes the occasion even bigger for me and others from the Surjit Hockey Academy is that we will be playing at the same ground where we learned the sport for seven years," said Pathak, who last made his India appearance during the tour of South Africa in December 2025."I don’t think there can be anything bigger than that. I would like to thank the Punjab government and Hockey India for giving us this opportunity," he added.Pathak Reflects On His PreparationCarrying an experience of 156 caps, Pathak was the understudy of legendary PR Sreejesh who retired after the Paris 2024 Olympics. I believe I have done that and am now focused on this opportunity at the Asian Champions Trophy," said Pathak."We (the development team) played matches against the Karnataka senior national team in Bengaluru. But besides the matches and team training, we did extra goalkeeping sessions so that I keep working on the things that I was told to improve upon," he added.India To Face Bangladesh In Tournament OpenerIndia will begin the tournament against Bangladesh on October 27, followed by matches against China on October 29, Japan on October 30, Malaysia on November 1 and South Korea on November 2.All league-stage matches will be played in Jalandhar from October 27 to November 2, while Mohali will host the semi-finals and the medal matches on November 4 and 5.India enter the tournament as the most successful team with five titles – 2011, 2016, 2018 (joint winners), 2023 and 2024.
