Significant early results from the 2026 US midterm elections came in the form of victories for Virginia Congressperson Suhas Subramanyam and Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller. The race of Indian-American candidates in Florida and Ohio continues to attract national attention as counting of ballots determines congressional control over Capitol Hill.
In the US House of Representatives, Suhas Subramanyam was re-elected in Virginia's 10th District, beating Republican candidate Dave Beckwith by more than 63% of votes. In 2024, he became Virginia’s first Indian-American Congressman.
Success of Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller in Maryland: Aruna Miller won re-election as the Lieutenant Governor alongside her colleague Democrat Wes Moore as Democratic Governor. The one ticket defeated Republicans Dan Cox and Rob Krop which means the Indian-American representation in the executive government of Maryland will continue.
Pia Dandiya in a competitive race in Florida: Democrat Pia Dandiya is winning over Republican Casey Askar in Florida’s 22nd District.
So far nearly 94% of the 280,000 estimated ballots have been counted with former school principal Dandiya coming to the front with 52% of the votes.
The race in South Florida has gained popularity and currently would determine which party would control the 435-member US House of Representatives.
Vyvel Ramaswamy falls behind in Ohio comeback race: In Ohio, the former presidential candidate Vyvel Ramaswamy has fallen behind his Democratic challenger in early results of the governor elections.
Early ballot tabulations: With around 25% of the anticipated ballots tallied, Acton was in the lead with about 63% of the vote, while Ramaswamy received approximately 34%.
High stakes succession: Ramaswamy, who has the backing of President Donald Trump, is in the race to take over from fellow Republican governor Mike DeWine, who is term-limited; Acton is heading the Democratic slate.
In other states, Indian-American candidates had mixed fortunes on election night, with results still being calculated in several contests.
Massachusetts Senate: Independent candidate Shiva Ayyadurai lost his bid in the Senate race. Current Democratic Senator Ed Markey has been elected again.
Georgia House: Democrat Jyot Singh has taken an early lead over Republican Yassin Moghazy in the 97th House District race, while votes continue to be counted.
