Diwali shopping: Enjoy the festivity without straining your wallet

Planning should be done days ahead of the festival. Set aside the Diwali expenses from the monthly budget. Once you have calculated the amount required for rent, groceries, bills, loan instalments and insurance premiums, take out money for shopping, gifts and celebrations while still leaving room to invest some portion and contribute to the emergency fund.

New Delhi: Festivals mean shopping for clothes, home decor, sweets, food, gifts and more. Diwali, which is the festival of lights, is meant to be enjoyed, and there is nothing wrong with shopping and celebrations. However, it is better to ensure that the current celebrations do not impact your finances and drain your wallet.

While shopping this Diwali, it is best to keep your budget in check while spending.

Set budget

Planning should be done days ahead of the festival. Set aside the Diwali expenses from the monthly budget. Once you have calculated the amount required for rent, groceries, bills, loan instalments and insurance premiums, take out money for shopping, gifts and celebrations while still leaving room to invest some portion and contribute to the emergency fund.

Shopping with awareness

While shopping is a fun experience, it demands caution against lucrative discounts and offers that may be disguised as savings but are actually not. While buying items from the market or online, one should be clear about the items they want or need; otherwise, the attractive ads designed to trap consumers would make them buy stuff they don't even need.

Moreover, online shopping has provided people with an avenue to look for the best prices, compare costs and discounts, and make the best purchase. Sometimes, sellers offer discounts on shopping above a particular amount. This makes people buy stuff they don't even need to qualify for the lower rates. Impulsive buying is another enemy of your wallet. With the market and e-commerce websites filled with festive products and attractive items, shopping should be accompanied by caution and planning.

Avoid loans

Whatever expenditure has to be made during the season should be adjusted within the monthly budget and available savings. Taking a loan to meet festive needs should be avoided, particularly if you have prior debts to clear.

Moreover, those who use credit cards should be cautious about their limits. To keep spending in check and prevent any dues from accumulating, it is better to pay credit card bills on time. Once the payment is overdue, it may add to other expenses and debts.

Diwali is an occasion of love, fun and celebration and is not meant to strain your finances. Set a budget early, buy only what you need, and don’t let discounts push you into impulse purchases. Avoid borrowing for festive spending and pay credit card bills on time, so the cheer of Diwali does not leave behind a burden of debt.
