A high-level committee set up by the Maharashtra government to reform recruitment examinations has recommended raising the number of posts in the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) Group-C Services Combined Preliminary Examination 2026 to over 16,000.

It has also proposed a one-time, one-year relaxation in the upper age limit for recruitment examinations.

The panel was formed under a Government Resolution dated September 4, 2026, with the aim of making the state's recruitment exams more transparent, secure and reliable.

It has now given the government an interim report, which draws on consultations with students and other stakeholders across the state.

The committee chose to take up some of the most pressing issues raised by students first, and the interim report covers those.

More posts for Group-C exam

About 12 lakh candidates have applied for the Group-C preliminary exam. So far, advertisements have been issued for more than 5,000 posts, but various departments have since sent the MPSC requirements for over 11,000 more.

The committee has suggested adding these posts through a corrigendum, which would take the total to more than 16,000.

One-year age relaxation

The committee has recommended a one-time, special relaxation of one year in the upper age limit for all recruitment exams.

It would cover advertisements issued after January 1, 2026 where the selection process has not yet started, as well as advertisements issued up to December 31, 2027.

The panel has also said that applications for the Group-C exam 2026 should be reopened once.

This would give a chance to candidates who become eligible because of the extra posts and the age relaxation.
