Sanjay Gupta passes away: The sudden and tragic passing of veteran filmmaker Sanjay Gupta on October 30 has left the Indian film industry in profound shock. The 59-year-old director, known for pioneering sleek crime thrillers in Bollywood, passed away after sustaining a head injury from an accidental fall in his bathroom. As news of his demise spread, actors, directors, and long-time collaborators expressed deep grief, sharing personal tributes and cherished memories.
Singer Mika Singh shared a moving tribute on social media, describing the late director as a mentor who handed him his big break in mainstream Hindi cinema with the hit track Ganpat from Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007).
"Today has been one of the most shocking and heartbreaking days for me," Mika expressed. "Bhai, you were like a godfather to me. You gave me my very first Bollywood break, and I will always be grateful for your love, guidance, and support. You will forever remain in my heart."
Brothers Rohit Roy and Ronit Roy were visibly overwhelmed with emotion as they arrived at Gupta’s residence to pay their final respects. Accompanying actor Sudhanshu Pandey, both brothers were seen breaking down in tears while interacting with colleagues and Mumbai Police officials carrying out initial procedural formalities.
The duo had collaborated with Gupta on his 2017 hit Kaabil, while Rohit’s artistic and personal bond with the filmmaker spanned several projects, including Plan (2004), Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007), and Mumbai Saga (2021), alongside a shared passion for biking.
Actor Suniel Shetty, who starred in iconic Gupta directings such as Jung (2000), Kaante (2002), and Musafir (2004), took to X (formerly Twitter) to reflect on their decades-long bond.
"Still trying to come to terms with this news. We've spent so many days together, made films, shared laughs, arguments, ideas and memories that will stay with me forever," Shetty wrote.
Meanwhile, actor Sanjay Dutt delivered an emotional vow to honor his late friend’s legacy by fulfilling Gupta's unfulfilled dream project, Kaante 2. Dutt wrote: "We were just discussing Kaante 2 recently. I will make Kaante 2 your dream, in memory of you my brother. I will do everything for this dream of yours to come true."
Writer-director Milap Zaveri recalled meeting Gupta just ten days prior to the tragedy, where he shared the title of his next movie. Learning that the original title belonged to a project produced by Gupta’s father, Zaveri pledged to dedicate his upcoming film to his mentor.
"Guruji… my Gups. My Godfather. My God. My Father. My brother. My friend. I was 21 when you taught me life is not only full of flowers but also #Kaante," Zaveri posted, acknowledging Gupta for establishing his writing career with Kaante and Shootout at Wadala.
Veteran actor Anupam Kher fondly remembered Gupta’s boundless enthusiasm for world cinema, sharing that the filmmaker was also responsible for directing his son Sikandar Kher's debut.
"‘Kher saab, we must work together!’, That was almost always his opening line whenever we met," Kher recalled. "We always think there will be time. Another meeting. Another conversation. Another film. It hurts to know that this one will remain unfinished."
Director Hansal Mehta penned a poignant tribute reflecting on their deep friendship through career highs and lows, revealing he still wears the first luxury watch gifted to him by Gupta.
"Sanjay Gupta. Gups. My only boss in the film industry, perhaps. But more than that, a dear friend," Mehta stated. "My first and only Rolex came from him. Today it’s the one memory of him I carry on my wrist, and I don’t think I’ll ever take it off... My bro code began with you, Sanjay. And now it’s ended."
