A 35-year-old man allegedly killed his mother, wife and two minor children at their home in Bhopal before dying by suicide by jumping in front of a moving train, preliminary police findings suggested on Monday.
The incident came to light in the Chhola Mandir police station area of Madhya Pradesh's capital, where the bodies of four family members were found inside their residence in a multi-storey building near Gaur Marriage Garden.
The victims, whose throats had been slit, were identified as Narendra Sahu's mother, Saraswati Sahu (50), wife Somlata Sahu (29), daughter Kriti Sahu (10) and son Khush Sahu (6).
Initially suspected to be a case of mass suicide, the incident took a different turn after preliminary investigations indicated that Narendra had allegedly killed his four family members before taking his own life.
Narendra's body was later recovered from a railway track in the Chopra Kalan area, which falls under the Sukhia Sewania police station limits. No suicide note had been found at the site so far.
Police teams reached the residence after receiving information and launched an investigation. The bodies of the four family members were sent for post-mortem examinations to establish the exact cause of death.
A police official said the investigation was underway and all aspects of the case were being examined. The exact sequence of events would become clear after further investigation.
Police are also trying to establish the motive behind the suspected killings and ascertain whether Narendra was facing financial or mental distress or if a family dispute had preceded the incident.
Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
