Delhi-NCR's air quality worsened markedly by the morning of November 6, 2026, when nine major areas in the capital fell into the 'Severe' zone, with AQI values over 400. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), as of 7:00 AM, the average Air Quality Index for Delhi was 389 ('Very Poor'), while the surrounding Noida registered 313, and Gurugram was still engulfed in thick smog.

Rohini and Punjabi Bagh reputed as the most damaged

The National Capital Region was shrouded in thick toxic fog, resulting in decreased visibility and rising health hazards.

Top hotspots: Rohini posted record-high pollution with an AQI of 473, Punjabi Bagh closely followed at 464, and RK Puram was close behind at 441.

In broad terms: High population density areas such as Alipur (435), Sonia Vihar (435), Okhla Phase 2 (426), North Campus (424), ITO (420), and Najafgarh (412) recorded AQI in the 'Dangerous' and 'Severe' zones.

Better places: Pusa's reading was 393, Chandni Chowk 386, and Anand Vihar was logged at 350 and Lodhi Road at 306.

Health specialists warn of severe respiratory effects.

An AQI index of more than 400 poses severe threats to both healthy people and at-risk patients with asthma or heart disease.

Inhaling particulate matter at these concentrations triggers dry coughing, throat irritation, nasal inflammation, and sudden breathlessness during basic physical activities like climbing stairs.

"Prolonged exposure to AQI levels above 400 delivers toxic particulate loads equivalent to smoking multiple cigarettes a day, directly impacting pulmonary function across all age groups," health officials warned.

    Essential precautions for NCR residents

Health authorities recommend strict preventive measures until meteorological conditions improve:

Limit exposure: Avoid morning and evening outdoor jogs, walks, or heavy physical exertion.

Wear protection: Use properly fitted N95 or FFP2 respirators whenever stepping outside.

Indoor air safety: Keep windows and doors sealed during peak smog hours and deploy HEPA air purifiers where available.

Medical consultation: Seek immediate medical advice if experiencing persistent tightness in the chest, wheezing, or acute shortness of breath.
