Severe congestion affected transit routes in East Delhi at 5:00 AM Friday morning, creating huge traffic jams suffered by motorists around Anand Vihar and Ghazipur. The early morning queues were preceded by congestion forming at places like ITO, the Barapullah Flyover, Mayur Vihar Phase-1, and the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway throughout the Thursday evening rush hour.
The severe blockage was unusually acute, even though the Delhi Traffic Police enacted a detailed traffic management scheme from November 5 till November 15.
The plan aimed to provide safe passage for commuters travelling across state borders for Dhanteras, Diwali, Bhai Dooj, and Chhath Puja and was meant to resolve transport problems concerning the Anand Vihar Interstate Bus Terminal and nearby railway stations.
Impaired roads: Traffic flow was particularly affected along roads No. 56 (Chaudhary Charan Singh Marg) and No. 57 (Swami Dayanand Marg).
Existing diversions: Road diversion measures were in full force at Ghazipur Roundabout and Ramprastha in Vivek Vihar.
The Delhi Traffic Police have issued recommendations to the public to avoid passing through problematic highways:
Guidance for those travelling towards NH-24, Sarai Kale Khan, and Barapullah: It would be great to reroute via GT Road towards the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway.
Advice for passengers from Ghaziabad and Dilshad Garden: The traffic will have to be routed through GT Road, taking the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway link just before the Akshardham.
Restrictions on transit hub: No stopping, waiting, or parking is permitted for any vehicle, including cars, buses, auto-rickshaws, and taxis anywhere on both sides of Road No. 56 near the ISBT gates.
Traffic authorities strongly urge commuters to avoid roadside parking to prevent complete traffic shutdowns.
Violators leaving unattended vehicles on roadways face immediate towing and legal penalties.
