Delhi-NCR experienced severe air pollution as air quality fell into the "Very Poor" category on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, when the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) jumped to 334. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) announced Stage 2 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) for all parts of the National Capital Region to avoid the worsening of the environmental crisis.

Rapid deterioration of air quality in 72 hours

Poor weather conditions and declining temperatures led to the sudden increase of fine particulate matter in northern India in the past three days.

    • October 31: AQI was moderate at 117 in Delhi.
    • November 1: Air quality fell into the "Poor" category at 261.
    • November 2: AQI reached 324 by 4 PM crossing "Very Poor".
    • November 3: AQI climbed up to 334 in the morning hours when forecasts of IMD and IITM promised no respite from bad weather.

Various restrictions on pollution under GRAP Stage 2

Once Stage 2 is announced, it is mandatory for municipal and enforcement agencies in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram, and such jurisdictions, to adhere to dust suppression and anti-emission measures.

Dust control: It is necessary for local governments to introduce mechanical road cleaning machines, constant watering systems, and anti-smog facilities on the busiest roads.

Bar on energy consumption: Inns, restaurants, and cafes will not be allowed to prepare food on coal and wood in their tandoor ovens and will have to switch to electricity or gas cooking.

Monitoring construction operations and waste management: Monitoring groups need to prevent open burning of waste and ensure that construction sites and dumping grounds are covered to prevent dust emissions.

    Monitoring traffic and industries

Traffic wardens are being placed at important intersections to avoid jams, which can considerably increase the amount of exhaust fumes produced by cars.

Monitoring groups will check Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates very thoroughly and apply to police for detaining vehicles that exceed emission standards.

Regulators will also check factories, brickyards, and power plants to ensure compliance with fuel standards.
