The jagged line of the Kargil-Leh National Highway of Ladakh, where every bend hides a reminder of how treacherous these high-altitude passes can be.  A heavy-duty military vehicle on National Highway-1 skidded down the road near Namika La Pass and disappeared into a deep gorge, nearly 600 feet below. Two Indian Army personnel the vehicle’s driver and the co-driver perished at the scene, their names not yet disclosed by the authorities, waiting for next of kin to be informed.

Witnesses described the moment of catastrophe said “A convoy of military vehicles had been negotiating the narrow corridor when a heavy truck, carrying essential equipment and supplies, seemed to lose stability on a curve that required precise handling. The vehicle allegedly drifted toward the outer edge, its tires biting for traction on a surface that had a thin layer of frost. Within seconds, it lurched, toppled over a guardrail, and slid down the slope, breaking apart as it tumbled into the gorge.

Rescue teams were mobilised with the urgency of a region that lives and dies by its access routes. Local police posted at Wakha, and the district command in Kargil coordinated with Army units, ITBP, and NDRF teams, and a cadre of volunteers who know the terrain better than most. The initial challenge was to reach the site, a task complicated by the rocky outcrops, loose scree, and the avalanche-prone area that often demands careful, rope-assisted descents rather than mechanical lifts. Helicopters were roped in only when winds permitted, and the ground teams could secure a stable landing zone. In the stillness of the mountains, the clink of carabiners and the whir of rescue gear cut through the quiet, a stark reminder of the stakes.

Two bodies were recovered from the wreckage after a painstaking operation that involved lowering a team down the cliffside, securing the vehicle's remains, and retrieving the corpses with the precision born of repeated exposure to tragedy in the hills.

The bodies were brought up to the Community Health Centre in Chiktan, where medico-legal formalities, including post-mortem examinations, would proceed to determine the cause and manner of death in a manner that aligns with established protocol.

The investigation into the precise sequence of events began immediately. Wakha Police Station registered a case under applicable sections.

An Army spokesperson emphasised that the integrity of the investigation would be preserved and that it would consider all angles, including mechanical fault, human error, and environmental conditions. The unnamed driver and co-driver had served with distinction in a unit that frequently traverses the border corridors and supply routes that are lifelines for the region. Their sacrifice, the spokesperson noted, underscores the risks that frontline personnel routinely accept in service of the nation.
