Back pain is often related to muscle strain, poor posture or long hours spent sitting. When back pain lingers or returns repeatedly, it is important to investigate the cause rather than simply blaming it on ordinary soreness. A slipped disc can be one of those causes. Dr Amit Sharma, Consultant Spine Surgeon at Saifee Hospital, Mumbai, shares that disc degeneration and related spinal problems do not occur in the elderly.
There are patients who believe these problems affect older adults. Changes in exercise habits, long periods of sitting, poor posture and repetitive physical strain can all increase back pain. More people now know that MRI scans are easier to obtain. Younger adults are more willing to seek help, which may explain why more slipped disc cases are being identified.
Exercise‑related strain is another factor. High‑intensity sports such as running, tennis, pickleball, and heavy weight training can place pressure on the spine if performed with poor posture, excessive load or insufficient rest. Likewise, sitting for eight to twelve hours a day without movement can worsen existing back problems. A slipped disc may make the back pain more intense.
It is important to recognise when back pain requires attention. Back pain that does not improve, persists or interferes with tasks should be evaluated by a doctor. A physical exam and if necessary an MRI can determine whether a disc problem, such as a disc is the cause.
Treatment depends on how severe are the symptoms and the doctor’s observations. There are patients who improve with medication, physiotherapy and activity modification. Surgery may be required if severe back pain continues despite appropriate treatment.
The key is to remain active while avoiding strain on the spine and to seek medical help when back pain does not subside.
Dr. Ankit Prajapati, Consultant – Neurosurgery at Sterling Hospitals, Gurukul, Ahmedabad adds not every back pain is necessarily slip disc. Muscle strain is frequent. They can cause aches or stiffness after working out, sitting for long duration of time or just because of maintaining bad posture. When pain radiates from the back or is accompanied by sensations it may signify that a nerve is irritated or compressed.
A slipped disc occurs when the soft inner core of a disc protrudes through its layer and may press on nearby nerves.
One of the symptoms is radiating pain. A back problem can produce pain that travels from the back through the bum and down the leg while a neck problem can cause pain that extends into the arm. People may also feel tingling, numbness or a sharp shock on one side of the body. These sensations can worsen when bending forward sitting for a time coughing or sneezing. If a slipped disc is present, the pain may radiate severely.
Another important symptom is muscle weakness. If a person has difficulty climbing stairs experiences a grip or finds their foot dragging while walking these should be taken seriously. Unlike muscle soreness, which typically improves within a day these issues may persist or worsen.
Consult a doctor if back pain does not improve within one or two weeks particularly if there is numbness, tingling or weakness. A doctor may recommend an MRI if a disc problem is suspected. A slipped disc may be the cause of the pain.
Certain symptoms require attention, such as rapidly worsening leg weakness, numbness around the groin or new problems with bladder or bowel control. These may indicate pressure, on nerves.
Recognising these signs early can help people receive treatment before conditions worsen.
