India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has been ruled out of the second T20I against New Zealand due to a low-grade right adductor strain, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Friday. The left-handed batter sustained the injury during the opening match of the series, which India won by four wickets.
The BCCI medical team is monitoring Kishan's progress, with his injury forcing India to consider changes to their playing XI for the second encounter. "Ishan Kishan is ruled out of the second T20I against New Zealand due to a low-grade right adductor strain, which he sustained during the first T20I of the series. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress," the board said in a statement.
Kishan's absence could open the door for teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to feature in India's playing XI. The youngster is among the contenders for a place in the team, according to India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak.
Speaking about the changes to India's batting order in the series opener, Kotak explained that Kishan had been dealing with a groin strain, which influenced the team's decision to promote Tilak Varma to No. 3.
"There was a lot of speculation I have also seen; just because Ishan had a strain in his groin, the batting order was changed," Kotak told reporters.
"If Ishan doesn’t play, unless he recovers completely, which the medical team will advise, Vaibhav (Sooryavanshi) could definitely step in for him. He is one of the strongest contenders," he added.
Sooryavanshi has attracted attention with his performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and age-group cricket. His potential inclusion could give India another option at the top of the order alongside Abhishek Sharma.
India began the T20I series with a four-wicket victory in the opening match, successfully chasing a target of 226 with two balls to spare.
However, India's batting-order decisions attracted attention, with Tilak Varma coming in at No. 3 ahead of Kishan. Varma scored six runs off 11 deliveries before being dismissed by Michael Bracewell, while Kishan managed just one run off three balls before falling to Mitchell Santner.
Kishan's injury now presents the team management with another selection decision ahead of the second T20I.
India have several options to consider at the top of the order, including the experienced Sanju Samson and the teenage Sooryavanshi. Abhishek Sharma remains another key part of India's aggressive batting approach.
Sooryavanshi had to wait for an opportunity during India's previous five-match T20I series against the West Indies, with the team retaining a largely settled combination.
The 15-year-old last represented India at the Asian Games, featuring in both the semi-final against Sri Lanka and the final against Pakistan, according to the information provided.
With Kishan unavailable for the second T20I, India's team management will have to assess its options before finalising the playing XI against New Zealand.
