Former England fast bowler James Anderson has admitted that Lancashire's decision not to renew his contract left him shocked and struggling with self-doubt. The veteran pacer, who captained the county side during the 2026 season, is now uncertain about whether he will continue playing professional cricket.

Speaking on the Tailenders podcast, Anderson revealed that he had expected a discussion about the team's plans for the next season but was instead informed that Lancashire wanted to move forward without him.

"I went in for what I thought was a conversation about how the team moves forward, because obviously it wasn't a great year for the team. Being captain, I thought it was sort of just a chat about that. And then a couple of minutes in, I realised it wasn't a conversation; I was just being told that they thought the best way for the team to move forward is without me. Obviously, I was quite shocked," Anderson said.

The decision has raised fresh questions about the future of one of cricket's most successful fast bowlers. Anderson's departure from Lancashire also brought back memories of how his England Test career ended in 2024.

James Anderson compares Lancashire exit to England retirement

Anderson drew a comparison between Lancashire's decision and the conversation that led to his international retirement in July 2024. He was informed by England captain Ben Stokes, head coach Brendon McCullum and managing director Rob Key that he was no longer part of the team's plans. The fast bowler subsequently played his final Test against the West Indies at Lord's.

Reflecting on Lancashire's decision, Anderson admitted that it prompted him to question whether he had done something wrong during the season. "I finished the season thinking, 'Was it something I did, but was I doing something wrong?' And then I get told this news and then I'm thinking that even more. I'm thinking, 'God, this is happening again. Is there something fundamentally wrong with me as a person, as a human being?'" he said.

Anderson added that the decision affected him for several days as he tried to understand what it meant for his future. "Your head just sort of races. I just didn't really know what to make of it for a good week. You're thinking, 'God, I'm never going to play cricket again'. All these sorts of things," the former England pacer said.

James Anderson's Lancashire record in 2026

Despite Lancashire's struggles in the County Championship's second division, Anderson delivered an impressive individual performance during the 2026 season.

The 44-year-old claimed 50 wickets at an average of 17 and captained his boyhood county, which he had represented for 25 years.

His performances made the decision not to offer him a new contract particularly difficult to process. Anderson revealed that he had expected discussions about how the team could improve after a disappointing season rather than an announcement that his time at the club was over.

The veteran pacer also explained that he and the head coach had spent the season assessing how they could help the team perform better.

"Last year didn't go too well for us on the field and all the way through the season, myself and the head coach are like, 'Is it something we're doing? Could we be doing more to help the team play better?'" Anderson said.

Will James Anderson retire from professional Cricket?

Anderson has yet to decide whether he will retire or explore opportunities with another county. The fast bowler admitted that he had hoped to finish his playing career at Lancashire, making the club's decision more difficult to accept.

"I don't know what the end looks like, but obviously I wanted to see my career out with Lancs. I don't know if my career's done, we'll have to wait and see, but it'd be nice, at some point, if someone will let me retire," he said.

He added that he was still processing the situation and weighing up his options. Anderson remains the leading wicket-taker among fast bowlers in Test cricket history. However, following his England retirement and Lancashire's decision not to renew his contract, his next move remains uncertain.
