Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the three-time champions, have reportedly reopened trade discussions with Mumbai Indians for the star India all-rounder Hardik Pandya ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 as they seek a captaincy solution following Ajinkya Rahane’s retirement from all formats of cricket.

According to a report by The Telegraph, Kolkata Knight Riders didn’t show much interest in Pandya after the initial round of discussions with Mumbai Indians mainly because of his injury worries but Rahane’s departure from competitive franchise cricket has forced KKR’s management back to the drawing board and they have now reignited their pursuit of Hardik.

While the Kolkata-based franchise boasts a strong core, it lacks an experienced, high-profile domestic captain capable of taking the helm immediately. KKR’s leadership is understood to trust Pandya’s captaincy and strategic traits, making him a logical target to fill the void left by Rahane, who captained the side in the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

Pandya, despite enduring a tumultuous run across recent seasons with Mumbai Indians, remains one of the league's most decorated active all-rounders and has proven title-winning credentials as a captain from his earlier stint leading Gujarat Titans. The 33-year-old had reportedly communicated an openness to seek a fresh start following a difficult IPL 2026 campaign.

Trade Roadblocks And MI's Demands

While KKR's front office - backed by owners Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla - is keen on securing Pandya's services, finalizing the transaction has encountered major resistance over player valuations.

KKR has been reluctant to part with core match-winners such as Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy, or Rinku Singh. Cameron Green was viewed as another potential option, but Australian players are unlikely to be available for much of the IPL due to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (January-February) and the subsequent five-Test Ashes series in England.

The Telegraph report further mentioned that MI have been pressing for pacer Harshit Rana and young batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi in exchange for Pandya. The five-time champions MI urgently need an Indian wicketkeeper, and the 22-year-old Raghuvanshi, who has been in good form in domestic cricket and is seen as an exciting batting prospect, could address that gap.

However, KKR face a dilemma over releasing Raghuvanshi, particularly as his mentor Abhishek Nayar serves as the franchise’s head coach. Discussions are expected to resume this week, with no final decision yet.

The retention deadline ahead of the December 16 mini-auction in Goa is November 15. The trading window closes one week before the auction, reopens a week after, and stays open until one month before the IPL begins.

MI are keen to finalise any Pandya deal before the auction so they enter it with clarity on retentions. KKR is viewed as Pandya’s strongest option among interested sides because it can potentially satisfy his preference for the captaincy.

Other Interest

Chennai Super Kings have shown initial interest but cannot offer Pandya the captaincy. MI have explored options such as Ayush Mhatre (rejected by CSK) or Shivam Dube plus another bowler; CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has denied any ongoing discussions.

Mumbai Indians have also sounded out Rajasthan Royals for Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravi Bishnoi, without significant progress.

Whether the Knights are willing to include Raghuvanshi (and Rana) in a package will likely decide if the long-rumoured Hardik Pandya–KKR move materialises before IPL 2027.
