Mumbai Indians are likely to bring back Rohit Sharma as captain for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season, with the five-time champions reportedly requesting the former skipper to take charge of the team again. According to a report by The Indian Express, Rohit has agreed to return to the leadership role following a series of discussions with the franchise.
The development comes amid a major overhaul of Mumbai Indians coaching staff ahead of the upcoming season. The franchise has appointed Kieron Pollard as head coach, replacing Mahela Jayawardene, while Robin Uthappa, Mitchell McClenaghan, T Dilip and Dhawal Kulkarni have also been assigned coaching roles.
Rohit, who led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles, shares the record for the most IPL trophies won by a captain with Chennai Super Kings' MS Dhoni. He had handed over the captaincy to Hardik Pandya ahead of the 2024 season.
According to The Indian Express, Mumbai Indians had considered bringing Rohit back as captain during the previous season when the team was struggling under Pandya's leadership. The franchise had also considered Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Tilak Varma as potential candidates.
However, Rohit reportedly suggested Tilak as a possible successor before the franchise approached him to take over the captaincy himself.
A source quoted by The Indian Express said, "Rohit initially had suggested Tilak Varma’s name but the franchise has requested him to take over captaincy which he has now agreed."
The source further revealed that Rohit's inputs were sought during the appointment of the new coaching staff, adding, "There were series of talks that had happened before him flying to New Zealand and Rohit’s suggestions were sought during appointment of new coaches as well."
Rohit's reported return would mark another major change in Mumbai Indians' leadership structure after Pandya replaced him as captain ahead of IPL 2024.
With Rohit expected to return as captain, Pandya's future at Mumbai Indians remains a key talking point ahead of IPL 2027. The all-rounder has been linked with a possible trade to other franchises following the conclusion of the previous season.
However, according to The Indian Express, Pandya is prepared to continue playing for Mumbai Indians under Rohit's captaincy if a trade deal does not materialise.
The franchise had faced considerable criticism after appointing Pandya captain following his return from Gujarat Titans in an all-cash trade ahead of the 2024 season. Mumbai Indians won only four of their 14 matches that year and finished ninth in the standings.
Pandya had previously led Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in their debut season in 2022 before guiding them to the final in 2023.
Mumbai Indians revamp coaching staff ahead of IPL 2027
Mumbai Indians have also made significant changes to their support staff ahead of the new season. Pollard will take over as head coach, while former India batter Uthappa has been appointed batting coach.
Former New Zealand pacer McClenaghan will replace Lasith Malinga as bowling coach. Former India fielding coach T Dilip has been named fielding coach, while Dhawal Kulkarni will serve as development bowling coach.
The appointments bring several former Mumbai Indians players back into the franchise's setup as the team prepares for IPL 2027.
With the reported captaincy change and coaching overhaul, Mumbai Indians are preparing for a new phase. However, Rohit's return to leadership and the uncertainty surrounding Pandya's future are likely to remain major talking points ahead of the upcoming season.
