The scars and surgical sutures of Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar are a testimony to the life-and-death battle fought in the air at a height of 34,000 feet. As UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan bestowed upon Captain Machchhar the First Class Order of Zayed II on October 28, 2026, the international community was finally able to see the extent of physical suffering endured by him due to his heroic actions during the flydubai cockpit attack.

Surviving the fire axe attack at 34,000 feet

During the violent mid-air incident that took place on September 30, the co-pilot hit Captain Machchhar in his head with a fire axe, which resulted in a fracture of his skull. This, in turn, caused bone fragments to be driven inward and caused excessive bleeding.

Threshold of critical condition: According to medical experts, this a type of injury generally results in loss of consciousness, paralysis, or shock.

Pure will power: In spite of being totally blind and feeling a lot of pain, Machchhar managed to overcome the attacker, pressed the emergency exit button, and unlocked the strong cockpit door.

His resolute decision ensured that the cabin staff and the passengers could run into the aircraft, overpower the attacker, and save 174 lives from harm.

    Noteworthy exception: Civilian heroism recognition

First Class Order of Zayed II ranks among the most prestigious civilian decorations of the United Arab Emirates.

Until now, the award had been bestowed upon only experienced diplomats, such as the former Indian Ambassadors Navdeep Singh Suri and Sanjay Sudhir for their work in forging strategic relations.

Captain Machchhar becomes the exceptional recipient of this decoration for personal valor and bravery.
