Hyundai revealed the Bayon SUV earlier this month. It will sit between the Venue and the Creta. The SUV has now started arriving at dealerships, ahead of its official launch on October 26. Let's look at what it gets.
Design
The front looks futuristic and follows Hyundai’s latest global design language. Slim, inverted L-shaped LED DRLs sit on either side. A gloss black strip connects them. The bumper looks busy, with many elements and heavy cladding. The LED headlamps sit low. The silver skid plate gives the SUV a lot of road presence.
From the side, the quirky 17-inch alloy wheels look smart. Thick cladding around the wheel arches adds to the muscular look. The windshield is sharply raked and the windowline is distinctive. Both keep the Bayon looking like a crossover. The Creta has a more traditional SUV shape.
The rear follows the front’s theme. You get slim LED taillamps, a gloss black strip and chunky cladding with a large silver applique. A sharkfin antenna and a roof spoiler with a white insert add a sporty touch.
Cabin and features
The dual-tone white and black finish feels premium and airy. You get a curved dual-screen setup. The four-spoke steering wheel carries the Morse-code logo from the Venue. A drive mode button suggests the SUV will offer customisable drive modes. The central AC vents sit low, with the climate controls between them. The cabin also has blue ambient lighting and silver inserts.
As for the features, you get a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come with it, along with a wireless phone charger. The SUV also gets drive modes, a Bose sound system, automatic climate control, and a panoramic sunroof. Hyundai adds connected car tech with Generative AI and ventilated front seats.
The Bayon will get Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) and a 360-degree camera. It also gets front and rear parking sensors and an electronic parking brake with auto-hold. We expect multiple airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), hill hold control (HHC) and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) as well.
Powertrain
Hyundai has confirmed a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that produces 115 PS and 144 Nm. It will come with a 6-speed MT and CVT automatic gearbox.
Launch date, expected price and rivals
The Bayon is set to be launched on October 26. Expect a price between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 17.5 lakh (ex-showroom). Bookings opened earlier this month.
It will take on SUVs like the Kia Seltos, Renault Duster, Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun. The Maruti Victoris, Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder also compete with it. So do the Nissan Tekton, Tata Sierra, Citroen Aircross X, Honda Elevate and MG Astor. Hyundai’s own Creta is on the list too.
