Honda Cars India announced 'Honda ALPHA' as the official name of its upcoming all-new electric SUV. The upcoming model will be the company’s first Made-In-India electric SUV. First showcased as a concept prototype at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, the production version of 'Honda ALPHA' will make its global debut on 2nd December 2026.
The Honda ALPHA will be manufactured at the brand's Tapukara plant in Rajasthan. The plant will also serve as the SUV's global production base. The announcement of Honda ALPHA also marks the first use in Honda Cars India’s official communication of the new H mark adopted for Honda’s automobile business globally.
Speaking on the announcement, Toshiyuki Yanagisawa, President & CEO, Honda Cars India, said, "We are delighted to announce Honda ALPHA as the official name of our upcoming electric SUV. Honda ALPHA represents our ambition to bring advanced electric mobility to our customers in India while delivering the quality, reliability and joy of driving that Honda is known for."
Honda ALPHA
The SUV is expected to use two LFP battery packs. Their capacities will likely range from 65kWh to 75kWh. At launch, it should get a single-motor, front-wheel-drive layout. Spy shots of pre-production test mules suggest the SUV will keep the radical shape of the 0 Alpha concept. The design looks unlike any current Honda. The rear end is nearly vertical, and the C-pillar is very thick. The front is expected to house an illuminated Honda logo and the charging port.
Interior and space
An earlier sighting of a camouflaged test vehicle gave us a look at the cabin. The highlight is a large touchscreen. A smaller digital driver’s display sits to its right. The three-spoke steering wheel has a flat bottom and paddle shifters. The centre console has several physical buttons.
The SUV could have a wheelbase of around 2,700mm to 2,800mm. Honda seems to be focused on maximising interior space. The upright tailgate also hints at good luggage space.
Why it matters
Honda ALPHA will mark the brand's entry into the fast-growing midsize electric SUV segment. It's a hugely important model for the brand in India. It will rival midsize electric SUVs like the Mahindra BE 6, Hyundai Creta Electric, Tata Sierra EV, Maruti e Vitara and Toyota Ebella.
