As India moves confidently into a future shaped by innovation, economic growth, and rising aspirations, our financial landscape is evolving faster than ever. People today are planning their goals more consciously, embracing digital platforms, and taking charge of their financial decisions with greater awareness.

India’s growing financial confidence is evident in the mutual fund industry’s expansion from Rs15.80 trillion in 2016 to Rs 82.64 trillion in 2026A. In this environment of expanding possibilities, one skill has become indispensable for sustaining and protecting this progress: Insurance Literacy. In India, insurance penetration stood at ~1%B for non-life. While, investments help build wealth, but insurance ensures that this wealth is not wiped away by unexpected shocks. This is where insurance literacy becomes transformational as it helps people understand how to secure their livelihood, what type of protection they need, and why timely decisions can make all the difference.

Understanding insurance is not just about policies and premiums as it is about empowering individuals to make informed, future-ready financial choices that safeguard everything they aim to build.

Insurance literacy also builds long-term resilience. When individuals understand how insurance coverage works, they avoid underinsurance, choose the right sum insured, and are aware of exclusions, which help in reducing surprises or shocks at the time of claims. Further informed policyholders file claims confidently, disclose information transparently, and engage responsibly with insurers. This not only strengthens trust but also enhances the overall health of the insurance ecosystem.

While insurance literacy is essential, it is equally important to introduce this awareness early in life. India’s investor profile is shifting rapidly: the average investor is now in their early 30s, with nearly half under 30. Gen-Z’s participation has surged from about 25% of NSE-registered investors in FY20 to 40% in FY25A. Early exposure to insurance literacy in school and college nurtures a generation that approaches financial decisions with clarity rather than confusion.

A society that prioritises insurance literacy becomes inherently stronger. Families recover faster from medical crises, businesses remain resilient during disruptions, and communities bounce back with confidence. Insurance literacy is the first step towards supporting India’s ongoing economic transformation, and its impact lasts a lifetime when introduced early.

In line with this mission, HDFC ERGO General Insurance, India’s leading private sector general insurance company, runs Insurance Quiz Junior for 8th and 9th-grade students. What began in 2016 with just 18 schools in one city has transformed into a nationwide movement, reaching nearly 3 million students over a decade. In 2026, the quiz expanded its reach further than ever before. With 16,900+ students from 4,850 schools participating across 28 states and 8 union territories, the initiative covered 76% of India’s districts and was conducted in 10 languages, making it one of the largest school-based financial awareness quizzes in the country.
