Tamil Nadu CM Vijay suspends Deputy Jail Superintendent and 16 staff following Theni jailbreak

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Vijay, instructed that N Ramalingam, the Deputy Jail Superintendent of Theni, and 16 other jail personnel should be suspended in response to the kidnapping of 17 inmates in the district jail on Saturday. This comes in the backdrop of a departmental inquiry and extensive transfers of almost the entire jail staff to fix failures in monitoring security in the jails across the state.

The incident that led to suspensions

N Ramalingam, who became in charge of the jail in Theni in August 2024, was removed from his position after the preliminary inquiry found him guilty of administrative maladministration.

Disciplinary mechanism: Seventeen jail staff members have been suspended awaiting the outcome of an inquiry.

Recent reshuffling of senior officials: The suspension followed the removal of the Director General of Police for Prisons and Correctional Services, Dr. Sandeep Rai Rathore, following the occurrence of two jail breaks in a week.

Security order: Vijay asked the department of prisons to implement a foolproof monitoring and change the monitoring mechanism in all the jails of the state.

The incident of an escape

The Theni district incident represents one of the largest breaches in jail security. This happened on a Monday when a group of 17 prisoners executed this deception that their cellmate suffered from a seizure.

As soon as the prison guard unlocked the cell to help the "sick" prisoner, the inmates overpowered him and took the keys to exit the facility.

The prison break continued into the nearby forest, where the escapees rode a motorcycle through Aranjanaipudur and made a phone call for help from a passerby in Ammachipuram who provided the fugitives with money, clothes, and other transport.

Police forces reavengers the 17 escapees

The massive search operation involved multiple police agencies in which a total of 17 specialized teams, 4 battalions, and 5 special task force units participated. This also included aerial drones that searched the forest from above.

Escapees stopped during police operation: Police captured 5 individuals on Tuesday who were placed in remand till 10th November. The police managed to capture 8 more on Wednesday while the last group was taken into custody on Thursday.

High-security jail leak: This breakout took place a short while after some convicts escaped from Puzhal Jail in Chennai on October 20th and were captured by police teams two days later.

Authorities take high-security measures: After successfully recapturing the 17 escapees, the police prepared to transfer these prisoners to different maximum-security facilities in the state.
