Murasu will be the second cyclonic storm to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast in less than a week.
Cyclone storm Murasu is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal before crossing the south Andhra Pradesh coast between the night of November 2 and the early hours of November 3, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.
The storm is expected to bring winds of 100-110 kmph, gusting to 120 kmph, as it crosses between Nellore and Narsapur, close to Ongole in Prakasam district. The IMD has issued a cyclone alert for the Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the likely impact of the storm with senior officials and cancelled his scheduled visit to Delhi on Monday.
Murasu moving towards Andhra Pradesh
In its latest bulletin, the IMD said Murasu had moved west-northwestwards at 25 kmph over the preceding six hours. At 5.30 pm on Sunday, it was centred over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, near latitude 12.7°N and longitude 84.1°E.
The storm was located about 420 km east-southeast of Chennai, 490 km east-southeast of Nellore, 500 km southeast of Machilipatnam, 510 km east-southeast of Kavali, 530 km southeast of Ongole and 560 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam.
Murasu is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by the early hours of November 2. It is then likely to move northwestwards and cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast between 11.30 pm on November 2 and 4 am on November 3.
Heavy rainfall, flooding forecast
At the review meeting, officials briefed the Chief Minister on expected rainfall, wind speeds, reservoir levels and precautionary measures in areas likely to be affected.
Moderate to heavy rainfall, with isolated instances of very heavy rain, is forecast across southern and central coastal districts on November 2. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at several places on November 3 and 4.
Of the 20 mandals where extremely heavy rainfall is anticipated, nine are in Eluru district, five each in Krishna and NTR districts, and one in Bapatla.
The projected average district-wise rainfall for November 3 is around 179 mm in Eluru, 163 mm in Krishna, 161 mm in NTR, 147 mm in West Godavari, 119 mm in Guntur and 104 mm in Bapatla.
An inflow of around 32,500 cusecs is expected at Budameru on November 3. Significant flooding is also possible in Errakalva, Gonelavagu, Jalleru and Pampa.
Officials warned that strong winds could damage between 12,102 and 15,128 electricity poles across 12 districts.
Second cyclone in less than a week
Murasu will be the second cyclonic storm to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast in less than a week.
Very severe cyclonic storm Arnab crossed the coast near Narsapur in the early hours of October 28, with sustained winds of 125-135 kmph and gusts of up to 150 kmph. It claimed seven lives and caused widespread damage to crops, roads, electricity and telecommunications infrastructure in coastal districts.
Thousands of acres of crops were damaged, while hundreds of electricity poles and trees were uprooted. Preliminary estimates put the losses at Rs 4,600 crore. A Central team is visiting the state to assess the damage.
Naidu also reviewed restoration work in areas affected by Arnab. Officials assured him that power supply would be restored in all affected areas by Sunday night.
