Prime accused arrested
Assam Police have arrested the prime accused in the shooting incident in Guwahati that claimed the lives of Bilas Inn owner Helena Bharali and her son, Debarshi Kashyap, officials said on Monday.
The accused allegedly fled after opening fire, prompting police to launch an operation to track him down.
The arrest marks a key development in the investigation into the killings, which took place in the Ulubari area of the city.
Land dispute suspected to be behind killings
According to preliminary information, a dispute over the land on which the hotel stands is believed to have been at the centre of the conflict.
Investigators are examining the circumstances that led to the shooting, the nature of the alleged land dispute and the accused’s suspected role in the crime. Police are also working to establish the sequence of events and determine whether anyone else was involved.
Police have yet to disclose all details of the investigation, including the identity of the arrested accused and the alleged motive behind the killings.
Further information is expected at a press conference by the police commissioner, which is likely to shed more light on the double murder and the steps taken to track down the accused.
