Jamia Millia Islamia university has agreed to restore its students’ union and hold elections by the last week of August 2027, following weeks of protests and hunger strikes over the lack of elected student representation at the university.

In an official communication issued on Thursday, the university administration directed that the drafting, approval and implementation of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU) constitution be completed by May 15, 2027.

The announcement comes after a prolonged standoff between students and the administration, with protesters demanding a definite timeline for the restoration of the union, which has remained defunct since 2006.

    Elections to follow academic session

According to the university’s decision, student union elections will be held within six weeks of the start of the academic session, which is scheduled to begin on July 16, 2027.

The timeline places the proposed polls in August 2027, with the administration committing to completing the constitutional process ahead of the election schedule.

The move follows sustained demonstrations on campus, including hunger strikes by students seeking the revival of the JMISU and the restoration of elected representation.

Protesters press for restoration of student pepresentation

The demand for student union elections has been at the centre of the agitation at Jamia Millia Islamia, where polls have not been held since 2006.

Students have been calling for a clear roadmap to bring back the union and have maintained pressure on the university administration through protests and hunger strikes.

The latest announcement provides a defined timeline for the constitution-making process and the subsequent elections, marking a significant development in the ongoing dispute.

The university has also appealed to the protesting students to call off their hunger strike as it moves towards implementing the agreed schedule.
