JD(U) accused Anant Singh of campaigning against the JD(U)’s official candidate, Neeraj Kumar, in the recent Bihar Legislative Council election for the Patna Graduates’ constituency.
The Janata Dal (United) on Monday formally sought the disqualification of Mokama MLA Anant Singh from the Bihar Legislative Assembly following his expulsion from the party for six years.
JD(U) state president Umesh Kushwaha submitted a recommendation letter to Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar, along with a 10-page dossier containing documentary evidence, including video footage, against the legislator.
The move marks a fresh escalation in the party’s confrontation with Singh, who was accused of campaigning against the JD(U)’s official candidate, Neeraj Kumar, in the recent Bihar Legislative Council election for the Patna Graduates’ constituency.
Why JD(U) wants Anant Singh disqualified
Kushwaha said Singh had acted against the party’s interests by openly opposing Neeraj Kumar and backing Anuj Singh, the Jan Suraaj candidate, in the election.
The Mokama MLA had appealed to voters to support Anuj Singh instead of the JD(U)’s official nominee.
According to Kushwaha, Anant Singh had also repeatedly made statements against the party leadership, prompting disciplinary action and his expulsion for six years.
The dispute intensified during the Legislative Council election campaign, when Singh openly opposed Neeraj Kumar and declared that he would not allow him to win. He subsequently campaigned for Anuj Singh in areas including Patna, Nalanda and Nawada.
Recommendation submitted to assembly speaker
Kushwaha visited the Bihar Legislative Assembly on Monday to enquire about the status of the party’s recommendation. He met Assembly Secretary and indicated that the matter was being processed, with a formal notice expected to be issued.
The JD(U)’s move has put Singh’s legislative future under scrutiny. However, his expulsion from the party does not automatically terminate his membership of the Assembly.
Any disqualification under the Constitution’s anti-defection provisions would have to be considered by the competent authority in accordance with the prescribed procedure.
The next steps will depend on the Speaker’s consideration of the recommendation and the applicable constitutional process.
Anant Singh’s wife also faces action
Meanwhile, Singh’s wife, former MLA Neelam Devi, has reportedly been removed from the state’s 20-Point Programme Implementation Committee. The minister-of-state status previously accorded to her has also been withdrawn.
The developments signal a widening dispute between Anant Singh and the JD(U), with the party pursuing action concerning both his political position and his Assembly membership.
