Valmiki Jayanti 2026: Date, history, significance, and 51 meaningful wishes to share on Ashwin Purnima

Happy Valmiki Jayanti 2026: Valmiki Jayanti is observed on the birth anniversary of Maharishi Valmiki, the sage credited with writing the Hindu epic Ramayana. The day honours the life and teachings of the Sanskrit poet, who is also called Adi Kavi. In 2026, it falls on October 26.

The festival is held on Ashwin Purnima in the Hindu lunar calendar, so its date shifts from year to year. According to Hindu mythology, Valmiki was born as Ratnakara and spent his early years as a highway robber. His life is said to have turned around after he met the sage Narad Muni, who pointed him towards devotion to Lord Rama.

Narad Muni is said to have asked him to keep repeating the word "Mara," which means "kill." As he went on repeating it, the word turned into "Rama," the avatar of Lord Vishnu.

Ratnakara then gave himself over to meditation and worship of Lord Rama for years. An anthill is believed to have grown around him while he sat in meditation, and this is said to be the origin of the name Valmiki, which in Sanskrit means one born from an anthill.

Maharishi Valmiki's role in the Ramayana

According to tradition, years of meditation led him to enlightenment, and he came to be known as a Brahmarishi. Mythology says Lord Brahma then blessed him with a vision, which inspired him to compose the Ramayana.

The Ramayana is one of the most important epics in Hindu mythology. It has 24,000 verses divided into seven cantos, or Kandas, the last of which is the Uttara Kanda.

Valmiki is also a character in his own epic. In the story, he gave shelter to Sita, Lord Rama's wife, at his hermitage during her exile, and he taught her sons, Luv and Kush, while they lived there.

For his contribution to Sanskrit literature and the Ramayana, he is known as Adi Kavi, the first poet, and is widely revered as Maharishi Valmiki.
