In a momentous development for world football, Cristiano Ronaldo has officially announced his retirement from international football, drawing the curtain on an unprecedented 23-year career representing Portugal.

The 41-year-old icon leaves behind one of the most decorated and statistically unmatched legacies in international football history, holding the all-time world records for both appearances (234 caps for Portugal) and goals (146) in men’s international football.

Ronaldo took to social media to confirm the decision on Thursday morning, with the caption "Portugal will always be in me."

"To the Portuguese people, the day has come for me to hand back the number seven shirt of our national team," Ronaldo said in an Instagram video.

"I never felt it belonged to me alone, but for 23 years I had the privilege and responsibility of wearing it, defending it and carrying it with me into stadiums all around the world.

"Today the time has come to pass it on to the future. It was not an easy decision, because some decisions are not made with the mind alone - they are also made with the heart.

"A journey that began in August 2003 and changed my life forever has come to and end," he added.

The announcement marks the close of a defining chapter in Portuguese sporting history, following recent speculation surrounding his role in the national squad.

A Historic 23-Year Odyssey (2003-2026)

Ronaldo’s international career began in August 2003, when an 18-year-old winger came on as a second-half substitute against Kazakhstan under Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Over the next two-plus decades, he evolved from a flashy prodigy into his country's greatest talisman and undisputed leader:

Euro 2016 Triumph: Captained Portugal to their historic first major international trophy at UEFA Euro 2016 in France, lifting silverware that cemented Portugal among world football's elite.

Inaugural Nations League Title: Led Portugal to glory in the 2019 UEFA Nations League Finals on home soil in Porto.

Tournament Regularity: Featured across six European Championships and five FIFA World Cup tournaments, becoming the first player in history to score in five separate World Cup editions.

Record Marksman: Rewrote the record books by surpassing Ali Daei's international scoring record, retiring with well over 130 international goals.

The Legacy Left Behind

Ronaldo's retirement leaves Portugal transitioning into a new generation headlined by Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rafael Leao, and Vitinha.

Yet his transformative impact on Portuguese football - turning a historically underachieving side into consistent European and global contenders - remains an indelible foundation for decades to come.
