Former South Africa all-rounder Albie Morkel has returned to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) after 13 years, joining the franchise as an assistant coach ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season. Morkel will work under newly appointed head coach Zaheer Khan as the five-time champions reshape their coaching staff.
Morkel represented CSK from the inaugural IPL season in 2008 until 2013 and was part of the team’s title-winning campaigns in 2010 and 2011. His return marks a new chapter in his association with the franchise, where he enjoyed some of the most successful years of his playing career.

Albie Morkel's coaching journey
After leaving CSK in 2013, Morkel went on to represent Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Delhi Daredevils and Rising Pune Supergiant in the IPL. He later moved into coaching and has been associated with Johannesburg Super Kings as their head coach.
The upcoming IPL assignment will mark his first coaching stint with an IPL franchise. His experience as a former CSK player could prove valuable as the team prepares for the 2027 season under Zaheer’s leadership.
CSK add Gareth Batty and Mohit Sharma to coaching staff
CSK have also announced changes to their coaching setup, with former England cricketer Gareth Batty joining as an assistant coach and former India pacer Mohit Shfvarma taking up the bowling coach role.

Welcoming Mohit back, CSK recalled his early years with the franchise and his reputation for effective slower deliveries and variations.
