Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket after an illustrious career with Australia across formats. The explosive all-rounder leaves behind a legacy of match-winning performances and memorable knocks including his iconic unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Australia's explosive all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing the curtain down on a career that spanned more than a decade across all three formats. The announcement was reported by ESPNcricinfo on Monday.

Maxwell represented Australia in 286 international matches, scoring 7,226 runs and taking 136 wickets. Popularly known as 'The Big Show', the 38-year-old was part of Australia's title-winning campaigns at the 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cups and the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Glenn Maxwell's rise in International cricket

Maxwell made his international debut in an ODI against Afghanistan in 2012. He went on to establish himself as one of the most destructive batters in white-ball cricket, with his aggressive approach, unconventional strokeplay and ability to turn matches around in a matter of overs.

Apart from his batting, Maxwell also contributed with his off-spin bowling and athletic fielding. His versatility made him an important member of Australia's limited-overs setup over the years.

The Australian all-rounder also shares the record for the most centuries in men's T20 internationals, with five hundreds alongside India's Rohit Sharma.

Glenn Maxwell's historic double century against Afghanistan

One of the defining moments of Maxwell's career came during the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. Australia faced Afghanistan in a league-stage encounter at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, with a target of 292 runs to chase.

Australia were reduced to 91/7 and appeared to be heading towards defeat. However, Maxwell produced a remarkable counter-attacking innings despite struggling with severe cramps and limited mobility.

The right-handed batter remained unbeaten on 201 off just 128 deliveries, guiding Australia to a stunning three-wicket victory. His innings became one of the most memorable performances in ODI World Cup history and further cemented his reputation as a big-match player.

Maxwell's International career across three formats

Maxwell's final Test appearance for Australia came in 2017. He played seven matches in the longest format before focusing primarily on limited-overs cricket, where he made his biggest impact.

He had previously announced his retirement from ODI cricket following the 2025 Champions Trophy. Maxwell finished his ODI career with 3,990 runs, having played a key role in Australia's success in the format.

His last T20 international appearance came against Oman in February 2026. His reported retirement from international cricket now marks the end of a career defined by power-hitting, match-winning contributions and the ability to produce extraordinary performances under pressure.

Maxwell leaves behind a significant legacy in Australian cricket, having contributed to three World Cup-winning campaigns while establishing himself as one of the most entertaining and unpredictable all-rounders of his generation.
