IPL 2027: Zaheer Khan set for crucial meeting with MS Dhoni before CSK retention deadline

With the player retention deadline for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 set for mid-November, the five times champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) find themselves at a pivotal crossroads. Newly appointed Chennai Super Kings head coach Zaheer Khan is set to meet franchise talisman MS Dhoni in Mumbai in the coming days as the franchise finalises player retentions ahead of the November 15 deadline, as per an Indian Express report.

The high-profile meeting between the two 2011 World Cup-winning teammates marks the formal beginning of a new era for the five-time champions, following a sweeping overhaul of their long-standing coaching staff.

A New Chapter At The Helm

Zaheer Khan’s arrival as CSK head coach represents one of the biggest structural transitions in the franchise's history, stepping into the role previously occupied by Stephen Fleming. Following disappointing campaigns where CSK failed to reach the playoffs since their 2023 title triumph, the franchise management has initiated a broad refresh of its dugout.  

The Chennai-based outfit recently parted ways with veteran coaching stalwarts, including batting coach Michael Hussey and bowling consultant Eric Simons.

Zaheer recently held initial discussions with management in Chennai to assemble his core staff, with Albie Morkel and Gareth Batty slated to join the setup, while James Foster and Sridharan Sriram are set to remain.

Core Squad Reshuffle: CSK are reportedly preparing to release several high-value, underperforming players to free up a significant purse for the upcoming mini-auction.

Zaheer wants Dhoni's direct input on squad dynamics, identifying which domestic and overseas core players must be retained to maintain the dressing-room equilibrium.
