Sri Lanka scripted history in ODI cricket by completing a remarkable 430-run chase against England in the third match of the ongoing tri-series at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Thursday, October 22. The Kusal Mendis-led side scored 430/8 with one ball remaining to register a memorable two-wicket victory and record the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history.
The result came just 22 days after India chased down 406 runs against the West Indies in Guwahati to register the third-highest successful run chase in the format. South Africa continue to hold the record, having chased 435 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.
Harry Brook's record double century goes in vain
England captain Harry Brook produced a stunning batting performance, scoring 202 off just 116 balls to help his team post a mammoth 429/4 after being asked to bat first. Brook's innings featured 21 fours and 10 sixes, making him the first England batter to score a double century in men's ODI cricket.
Brook also broke the record for the fastest double century in men's ODIs, reaching the milestone in 114 balls. India's Shubman Gill had previously held the record after scoring a double century in 117 balls against the West Indies in September 2026.
Joe Root contributed 69 off 66 balls and became the first England batter to reach 8,000 ODI runs. Tom Banton also scored a half-century, while Will Jacks remained unbeaten on 66 as England finished with a formidable total.
Pavan Rathnayake, Avishka Fernando power Sri Lanka's chase
Sri Lanka's chase did not get off to an ideal start, as the team slipped to 24/2. However, Avishka Fernando and Pavan Rathnayake steadied the innings with a crucial 166-run partnership for the third wicket.
Fernando scored 97 off 83 balls, while Rathnayake played a match-defining knock of 130 off 106 deliveries. Rathnayake later joined forces with Dasun Shanaka, who smashed 97 off just 50 balls, as Sri Lanka continued to close in on the daunting target.
The pair added 133 runs off 79 balls, putting Sri Lanka firmly in contention. Rathnayake struck 15 fours and three sixes, while Shanaka's explosive innings included eight sixes and six fours.
Janith Liyanage seals historic victory
With the match heading towards a tense finish, Janith Liyanage delivered under pressure. Sri Lanka needed eight runs from the final over and lost two wickets to England pacer Josh Tongue, leaving the contest finely balanced.
Liyanage kept his composure and smashed a six off the penultimate delivery to take Sri Lanka to 430/8 and seal an extraordinary victory. He remained unbeaten on 61 off 27 balls, overshadowing Brook's record-breaking innings.
Sri Lanka's successful chase also surpassed their previous highest ODI run chase of 324 against England at Leeds in 2006.
Sri Lanka set new ODI milestones
The victory placed Sri Lanka second on the list of the highest successful run chases in men's ODI cricket. They also became the first team to successfully chase a target of more than 400 runs in an ODI played outside their home country.
Sri Lanka had previously scored 411/8 while batting second against India in Rajkot in 2009 but lost that match by three runs. The Rawalpindi contest also produced a combined total of 859 runs, the second-highest aggregate in ODI history, behind the 872 runs scored in the famous South Africa-Australia encounter in Johannesburg in 2006.
Following the victory, Sri Lanka registered their first win of the ongoing tri-series, which also features Pakistan. Pakistan had won their opening two matches against Sri Lanka and England and are scheduled to face England in Lahore on Sunday.
