The Yemen-based Houthi rebels have now reported a ballistic missile attack on Saudi Arabia's Defence Ministry located in the city of Riyadh on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, an escalation in regional missile strikes. The Saudi Arabian military officials stated that they have successfully intercepted several ballistic missiles fired into the capital Riyadh as well as eastern provinces before turning off alert threats soon after the explosion sounds in Riyadh.Houthi claims vs. interception of ballistic missiles by Saudi Arabian air defence systemThe military spokesman Yahya Saree of the Houthi military group issued a statement through social media reporting that his group has launched an attack targeting strategic military assets in the kingdom.Ministry of defence: He stated that a "direct hit" had been achieved in their attack on the headquarters of the Ministry of Defence in Riyadh.Airfield attack: He further added that they targeted two military transport aircraft with ballistic missiles in the airports of Najran and King Khalid Air Base in Khamis Mushait, besides using drones against Abha International Airport.Oil refinery attack: Besides this, he announced the attack on Ras Tanoura oil refinery located in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.Explosions in Riyadh and responses of the coalition forcesSeveral explosions occurred in the capital city of Riyadh Tuesday morning, when Saudi Patriot missile defense systems were targeting the incoming objects in the sky.Spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition Brigadier General Turki al-Malki confirmed that the air defenses managed to destroy several ballistic missiles which targeted Riyadh and the Eastern Province, along with four explosive-laden drones which targeted the southern provinces.The officials of Saudi Arabia have not revealed any damages or strikes to the Defense Ministry compound and the Ras Tanoura oil refinery, asserting that no casualties took place.Tensions escalate in the Arabian PeninsulaThese attacks are in continuation of the prior threats by the Houthis targeting the installations of Saudi Aramco in Yanbu and King Fahd International Airport in Dammam.

<div>Yemen’s Houthi group on Saturday claimed responsibility for attacks targeting airports, oil infrastructure and a military airbase across Saudi Arabia, escalating tensions as the kingdom faces a renewed wave of strikes.</div><div>The group’s military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, said the targets included King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, Najran airport and an airbase in Khamis Mushait. He also claimed attacks on the East-West oil pipeline, crude oil pumping stations, a Saudi Aramco facility in Yanbu and the Rabigh oil refinery.</div><div>Saudi authorities had not immediately confirmed the latest claims.</div><div>The announcement came hours after the Saudi-led coalition said it had intercepted and destroyed two ballistic missiles launched towards the Saudi cities of Taif and Yanbu.</div><h2>Saudi Arabia issues security alerts</h2><div>Saudi Civil Defense briefly warned residents in Taif, Yanbu, Mecca and Jeddah of potential danger on Saturday. Around 10 minutes later, it announced that the threat had passed.</div><div>The latest Houthi claims follow a series of attacks on Saudi military, energy and civilian infrastructure in recent weeks.</div><div>On Thursday, the group said it had targeted Saudi Arabia’s Defence Ministry in Riyadh, Aramco facilities in Yanbu and King Fahd International Airport in Dammam. Saudi authorities reported two deaths in Dammam but did not confirm the reported attacks in Riyadh and Yanbu.</div><div>The Saudi-led coalition also said it had intercepted drones over Riyadh and Medina on Thursday. The Houthis had denied targeting Medina a day earlier, following reports of drone interceptions over the holy city and Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province.</div><h2>Deadly airport strikes earlier this month</h2><div>Saudi Arabia has faced repeated attacks on its airports this month. An October 10 strike on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh killed at least 12 people and injured 309, according to Saudi authorities. The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack, which was the third reported strike on the airport that week.</div><div>The victims included four Saudi nationals and citizens of Bangladesh, the United States, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Sudan and Egypt, according to Saudi civil aviation authorities.</div><div>Two earlier airport attacks that week killed four people and severely damaged a Saudi commercial aircraft parked on the tarmac. Saudi Arabia’s threat-warning system did not issue an alert before the October 10 strike.</div><div>Earlier this month, the Houthis also warned airlines against using Saudi airspace, exempting the airspace over Mecca and Medina.</div><h2>Renewed fighting threatens fragile calm in Yemen</h2><div>The latest escalation has disrupted the relative calm that followed a United Nations-brokered truce in 2022, which largely halted cross-border attacks.</div><div>Saudi Arabia backs Yemen’s internationally recognised government, while the Houthis control the capital, Sanaa. The group has been fighting forces aligned with the Yemeni government, which is supported by the Saudi-led coalition.</div><div>The renewed hostilities have also opened another front in the wider US-Israeli war on Iran, adding to regional security concerns as attacks increasingly target critical infrastructure and civilian aviation facilities.</div><div> </div>

New Delhi: Behind the employment contracts signed in Bangladesh and the jobs taken up in Saudi Arabia are reports of hardship from women who have returned home before completing their contracts. Some have allegedly faced unpaid wages, excessively long working hours, physical abuse and sexual harassment.Rights groups say that the cases suggest possible weaknesses in enforcing labour protections for migrant domestic workers, despite agreements and regulations meant to protect them.More than 1,72,000 Bangladeshi women travelled abroad for work between January 2024 and mid-October 2026, according to official data from Bangladesh. Around 1,20,000 women went to Saudi Arabia, their main overseas work destination. More than 1,500 women had returned to Dhaka since September, including around 1,000 from Saudi Arabia, show data from migrant support organisations.The death sentences handed down to two Bangladeshi nationals in Saudi Arabia on allegation of indulging in adultery have led to outrage across the country. The case has also brought attention to allegations that Bangladeshi women employed in Saudi households face abuse and struggle to escape difficult working conditions or seek help.The scale of the problem is difficult to establish because Bangladesh does not maintain a complete record of women who return after experiencing alleged abuse overseas. Shakirul Islam, president of the Migrant Workers Development Programme (OKAP), said the organisation's research into women who returned in July last year found that 90% had left because of physical or psychological abuse.Independent research has documented similar experiences among women from other countries working in Saudi Arabia. In a report published on July 9, 2026, Amnesty International documented the experiences of 19 Filipino women who had returned from the kingdom, mostly between 2023 and 2026. The women described excessive working hours, degrading treatment, exploitation and sexual abuse. Some said they had worked for up to 21 hours a day, with little opportunity to rest or take a day off.In a report published on July 9, 2026, Amnesty International documented the experiences of 19 Filipino women who had returned from the kingdom, mostly between 2023 and 2026.<h2>Why domestic workers face risks</h2>Riyadh has introduced several labour reforms under its Vision 2030 programme. Saudi Arabia revised its domestic worker regulations in 2023. The new rules took effect in September 2024. The provisions include limits on working hours, weekly rest, protection against passport confiscation and requirements for written employment contracts. However, domestic workers fall outside the main Saudi Labour Law and are governed by separate regulations. This distinction is important because women employed in private homes often work without the independent oversight available at conventional workplaces. Their employers control their working conditions and may also influence their freedom of movement and ability to leave the job.The Amnesty International's report found that some Filipino workers had difficulty leaving abusive employers because of restrictions on movement, passport confiscation and unfamiliarity with local procedures. The organisation said the presence of the kafala sponsorship system left workers dependent on employers for their legal status and ability to change jobs. The kingdom’s government claims that domestic workers are protected by existing regulations and that complaints of abuse are investigated. It has also cited standard employment contracts, wage protection, insurance schemes and complaint mechanisms as measures aimed at safeguarding workers. Amnesty said that the government did not provide answers to its detailed questions about how these protections were being enforced. <h2>A decade-old deal, few safeguards</h2>Saudi Arabia first received Bangladeshi workers in 1976. Since then, over 3 million people from the country have worked in the kingdom, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported. Saudi Arabia is also one of Bangladesh’s largest sources of remittances. Overseas workers’ earnings play an important role in the country’s economy. Following reports of abuse and the early return of many women from the kingdom, the two countries signed an agreement on domestic workers in 2015. The agreement set a monthly salary of 800 Saudi riyals for domestic workers on two-year contracts and provided for recruitment without fees charged to the workers.Rights organisations have since cited cases in which women allegedly received only part of their wages or were not paid at all. Some returning workers have said they faced abuse after asking employers for their salaries.Ghulam Masih, a former Bangladeshi ambassador to Saudi Arabia, while talking to BBC, has blamed part of the problem on weaknesses in the agreement and inadequate preparation before departure. He said that recruitment agents brought women from remote villages and sent them overseas without sufficient training in household equipment, working conditions or the language they would encounter.The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), in its 2025 report on labour migration in Asia, also documented Bangladesh's rising dependence on the kingdom as a destination for overseas workers. Saudi Arabia accounted for 66% of Bangladeshi labour migration in 2024, while women made up only 6% of the workers sent there through official channels. <h2>Wage protection and access to help</h2>Riyadh has introduced a digital wage protection service for domestic workers through its Musaned recruitment platform. The scheme began applying to new domestic worker contracts in July 2024, with a phased rollout for existing contracts and the stated aim of covering all domestic workers by January 2026. The system is aimed at making salary payments traceable through approved banks and digital wallets. The government has also introduced insurance for domestic labour contracts. The Saudi Press Agency said in December 2024 that the scheme was meant to protect workers and employers by providing compensation for certain contractual breaches and unforeseen circumstances. At that time, the kingdom had 3.74 million domestic workers, according to the agency. Reports of alleged abuse have led several South Asian countries to reconsider sending women to the kingdom for domestic work. Nepal lifted its ban on women travelling to several Gulf countries for work in 2022, but it has not reached an agreement with Saudi Arabia to send domestic workers. Sri Lanka has also said it is reluctant to send women to work in Saudi households.Dhaka faces the challenge of finding out how many women suffer abuse in Saudi Arabia, investigating their complaints and helping those who want to return home. A government official said the authorities were regularly discussing the issue with Saudi officials.

Saudi-Houthi Conflict: Turkey is weighing the scale of its military support for Saudi Arabia under a new defence pact with Pakistan after a rise in attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels. Air defence systems, intelligence sharing and military logistics are among the forms of assistance being considered. The question of sending Turkish troops abroad requires further legal steps, including parliamentary approval for the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement.Turkey’s Defence Ministry said on October 15 that the military capabilities offered to Saudi Arabia would depend on the kingdom’s needs and the conditions on the ground. It said the process would follow Turkey’s Constitution and relevant laws.According to Reuters, Ankara has been providing technical and defensive assistance to Riyadh. The support includes military equipment, weapons systems, air defence capabilities, drone operators and logistical assistance. The full scope of Turkey’s role under the new pact will depend on further decisions by the government and parliament. <h2>Air defence aid for under consideration</h2>Saudi Arabia has faced an intensifying series of Houthi missile and drone attacks. The strikes have targeted airports, energy facilities and military installations. These attacks have increased security risks for the kingdom.The attacks have also affected the strategic Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a major route for shipping between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Saudi-backed Yemeni forces have been fighting the Houthis in areas near the waterway.Turkey is expected to help protect Saudi territory and strengthen its ability to intercept incoming threats. Air defence equipment, technical support, intelligence and logistical assistance are among the options under consideration.Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on October 8 that military officials were assessing the support the country could provide, particularly air defence.“The technical evaluations are being carried out, and these continue among our military officials,” he said, according to Reuters.He also described the agreement as a defensive pact. “The Mecca agreement is a defence agreement. It is not an agreement for attack,” he has been quoted by Al Jazeera as saying.He added that Turkey would not send troops into another country to launch offensive operations. The distinction is important for understanding Ankara’s stated position on the pact and its possible role in the conflict.<h2>Why parliamentary approval is important</h2>Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement on August 7. The pact commits the three countries to treat an armed attack on one member as an attack on all members.Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on October 12 that the agreement would be submitted to parliament for approval in the coming days. Foreign Minister Fidan said that preparations for the submission had been completed.Turkey’s constitution gives parliament authority over the deployment of its armed forces abroad, subject to specific legal provisions and exceptions. The government must complete the relevant approval process before proceeding with deployments that require parliamentary authorisation.The Defence Ministry has said the nature of any assistance will depend on Saudi Arabia’s requests, military requirements and conditions on the ground. The government is also working to establish the political, administrative and military structures needed to implement the agreement.The pact’s members discussed these plans at an emergency meeting of their Strategic Political and Defence Committee in Riyadh on October 5. A joint statement said the countries would move towards implementing their collective defence commitments and arranging the deployment of agreed forces and capabilities in Saudi Arabia, subject to their national laws.The committee also appointed retired Pakistani Lieutenant General Nauman Mahmood as the alliance’s first secretary-general for a three-year term. <h2>Erdoğan, Fidan back Riyadh</h2>Erdoğan held a phone call with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on October 13 and extended support for Saudi Arabia following the attacks.The Turkish government has also maintained contact with Iran. Fidan spoke to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on October 13 about steps to reduce regional tensions.Erdoğan said on October 12 that Turkey’s position and principles were clear. “We never view events through a racial or sectarian perspective,” he said, adding that Ankara wanted peace and stability across the region.The diplomatic contacts show the range of factors influencing Turkey’s response to the attacks. Ankara has pledged support for Riyadh while holding talks with Tehran on the regional situation.<h2>Can the pact pull Turkey into the war?</h2>The Mecca agreement is still developing its institutional structure. Its three members are working on military coordination, defence cooperation and plans to implement their collective commitments.The alliance’s strategic committee decided on October 5 to move ahead with the deployment of agreed military capabilities to Saudi Arabia, in accordance with national legislation. The decision followed consultations over the security threats facing Riyadh.Recent attacks by the Houthis have given those talks a sudden sense of urgency. Controlling Sanaa and much of Yemen, the militia has been fighting a long war against Saudi Arabia and its allies, who first intervened back in 2015 to support the country's ousted government.With the situation escalating, governments across the region are zeroing in on the safety of Saudi Arabia's airports, energy infrastructure and crucial Red Sea trade lines.
