Four killed, 88 injured in an Egypt train collision near Cairo. Several coaches derailed in Giza as rescue teams responded and officials ordered an inquiry.

At least four people were killed and 88 others injured when two passenger trains collided in Egypt's Giza province on Sunday. The accident occurred in the Al-Ayyat district, where a train travelling towards Fayoum struck the rear of another service bound for Aswan.

How the Egypt train collision occurred

Egyptian National Railways said train number 134, operating between Giza and Fayoum, hit the back of train number 2010, which was travelling from Cairo to the southern city of Aswan. The collision took place between Kafr Ammar and Al-Riqqa stations, near Gerza village, along the Cairo-Aswan railway corridor.

Four passenger coaches were reported to have derailed. Rescue personnel, police and railway teams reached the scene as ambulances began taking injured passengers to hospitals. Authorities did not immediately establish what had caused the two trains to collide, and an investigation was ordered to determine the circumstances.

Egypt train accident: 88 injured, hospitals put on alert

The Health Ministry put the preliminary death toll at four and the number of injured at 88. The ministry said 72 ambulances had been involved in transporting victims and evacuating passengers from the site.

According to the ministry's updated figures, 49 injured people were taken to Al-Wasta Hospital, 29 to Al-Ayyat Hospital and 10 to Atfih Hospital. Two bodies were moved to Al-Wasta Hospital and one to Atfih Hospital, while a fourth was at the accident site when the statement was issued.

Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar instructed hospitals in Giza and neighbouring Beni Suef province to raise their level of preparedness and provide treatment to those injured. The ministry said medical teams were continuing to monitor the condition of patients admitted after the collision.

Egyptian President orders investigation into train crash

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi directed the authorities to conduct an urgent inquiry into the crash and take action against anyone found to have been negligent. He also called for medical assistance for those injured and conveyed condolences to the families of the people who died.

Meanwhile, the railway authority sent emergency workers and cranes to remove damaged carriages and clear the tracks. The accident affected rail operations on the route linking Cairo with southern Egypt.

Previous train accidents in Egypt's Al-Ayyat district

The Al-Ayyat area has seen serious railway accidents in the past. In September 2026, a driver and his assistant were injured after two goods trains collided in the same district. The accident led to the derailment of a locomotive and two waggons and railway officials ordered a technical investigation.

In February 2002, a fire aboard a passenger train south of Cairo killed more than 370 people in one of Egypt's deadliest railway disasters. That accident also occurred in the Al-Ayyat area.
