One dead, four injured in shooting near Paris; suspect arrested

One person was killed and at least four others were injured in a shooting in the Yvelines district, west of Paris, on Friday, French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said. A suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Ali Rabeh, the mayor of Trappes in Yvelines, told French broadcaster BFMTV that the attacker opened fire from a car, apparently targeting people at random in what he described as an apparent attempt to carry out a massacre.

Among the injured was a 12-year-old girl, Rabeh said. He added that the suspected gunman lived in a nearby town, but authorities had yet to establish a motive for the shooting.

Lecornu said in a post on X that security forces had been fully mobilised following the incident. He also noted that the national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office was monitoring the situation.

The anti-terrorism prosecutor's office confirmed that it was following the case, although its representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The prefecture also declined to comment.

The suspect remained under arrest as authorities monitored the situation.
