At least 14 people were killed and 10 others wounded on Thursday morning after a Russian drone struck a railway platform at Dnipro station in Ukraine, according to Ukrainian authorities. The attack took place while a commuter train and a scheduled passenger train were standing at the platform, turning one of the city’s busiest transport hubs into the site of a deadly incident.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the incident as a "horrific attack" and expressed condolences to the families and loved ones who lost their lives in the attack.
In a post on X, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said emergency services were working at the scene to help those affected.
"A horrific Russian strike on the railway station in Dnipro. The Russians launched a drone attack on a platform where an ordinary commuter train and a scheduled passenger train were standing. Unfortunately, 13 people have been confirmed killed as of now. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Ten more people were injured. All necessary emergency services are working at the scene," he said.
The Ukrainian president linked the attack to Russia’s continued military campaign, arguing that Western sanctions against Moscow had been eased without any de-escalation in Russian strikes.
"Just how many terrorist strikes has Russia carried out against our people since sanctions were lifted on certain Russian oligarchs and the Russian energy sector, rather than de-escalating?" Zelenskyy said.
He said Ukraine had consistently called for a decisive response from the United States and Europe to Russian escalation, adding that sanctions against Moscow and its war machine should not be eased while the war continued.
"It is time for new, stronger sanctions steps by the EU, the United States, and the G7. I thank everyone who is ready to help in this way," Zelenskyy added.
Drone warfare intensifies across Ukraine
The Dnipro strike came amid an intensification of drone warfare, with Russian forces launching 112 attack drones across seven locations in Ukraine, according to Ukrainian officials.
Ukrainian air defences intercepted 97 of the incoming drones, which included decoy unmanned aircraft and faster turbojet-powered "Geran" models. In a separate attack, Russian strikes heavily damaged an educational facility in Kharkiv.
Ukraine launches large drone operation
The Russian drone attack on Dnipro station followed a major overnight drone operation by Ukraine against Moscow on October 28-29, during which hundreds of Ukrainian drones targeted Russian territory.
Kyiv said it launched more than 1,200 drones towards Russian chemical, rocket-fuel and military infrastructure facilities in one of its largest deep-strike operations of the war.
The overnight strikes disrupted air traffic at three major Moscow airports, as flights were grounded amid the drone activity.
