New Delhi: Leaving a job before the specified retirement age may stop an employee's Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) contributions, but what happens to the amount in their PF account? Employees may wonder whether the amount stops earning interest as soon as they resign or continues to earn interest.

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) specifies a certain period during which an account earns interest based on the age at which the employee leaves their job. It is important for account holders to know these details to manage their finances accordingly.

As per the EPFO, an account stops earning interest 36 months after retirement or reaching the age of 55, whichever comes later. Even if a person decides to take premature retirement or is unemployed, the minimum retirement age of 55 would be considered, and interest would continue until the age of 58. Only after that does the account cease earning interest.

Account holders should understand a few conditions regarding their employment status to determine the status of their accounts. This would help them estimate the total amount accumulated by the time the account stops earning interest, allowing them to plan their finances for the post-retirement period accordingly.

Once the 36-month period is over, the account becomes inoperative, following which no further interest is earned on the principal. Here are the four cases explained:

Case 1: Retirement before 55

In the case of early retirement, the minimum retirement age of 55 would be considered, and the account would continue accumulating interest until the retiree reaches the age of 58.

Case 2: Retirement at 55

Once a member retires at the age of 55, the account would earn interest until the age of 58 and become inoperative after reaching that age.

Case 3: Retirement at 58

When a person retires at 58, the EPF account would stop earning interest and become inoperative at the age of 61.

Case 4: Retirement at 70

If a person retires at the age of 70, the EPF account would remain active for three years and become inoperative at the age of 73.

Even in cases of early retirement and unemployment, accounts remain active until the person reaches the age of 58. An inoperative account does not get blocked; it simply stops accruing interest. Other cases in which interest accrual in the account may stop after three years include permanent migration and death, subject to the applicable terms.

Interest credited by the EPFO may take some time to reflect in the account. Users might face a delay, but they cannot be denied the interest earned under normal circumstances. Claims related to Provident Fund withdrawals are usually settled within 20 days. In case of a delay beyond that, the person may raise a complaint at epfigms.gov.in.
