Defining legacy in crime cinema
Over a career spanning more than three decades, Sanjay Gupta established a distinct visual and narrative benchmark in mainstream Hindi cinema. Renowned for introducing high-octane action sequences, stylised green-tinted cinematography, and gritty urban crime narratives to Indian audiences, his work became synonymous with modern Bollywood action.
Gupta earned widespread acclaim for helming major commercial and critical hits, including Kaante (2002), Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007), which he also produced and co-wrote based on the real-life 1991 Lokhandwala Complex encounter, and its 2013 prequel, Shootout at Wadala. He further broadened his directorial repertoire across genres with high-profile projects like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s comeback thriller Jazbaa (2015), the Hrithik Roshan-starrer Kaabil (2017), the star-studded actioner Acid Factory (2009), and the multi-starrer mob drama Mumbai Saga (2021).
Partnership with Sanjay Dutt and iconic action thrillers
A core pillar of Gupta's career was his long-standing artistic partnership with actor Sanjay Dutt. Together, the duo delivered a string of iconic action thrillers, including Aatish: Feel the Fire (1994), Khauff (2000), Jung (2000), Musafir (2004), and Zinda (2006).
In 2001, Gupta expanded his creative footprint by establishing his production banner, White Feather Films. Under this flagship, he backed ambitious and unconventional projects, notably pioneering the multi-director anthology format in Hindi cinema with Dus Kahaniyaan (2007). In recent years, he produced and directed digital releases such as Visfot (2024), starring Riteish Deshmukh and Fardeen Khan, and The Miranda Brothers (2024), featuring Meezaan Jafri and Harshvardhan Rane.
Before emerging as a celebrated director, Gupta built his foundation in the film industry through post-production and sound design. He initially honed his craft as an assistant director under filmmaker Pankaj Parashar, working on seminal projects including the cult detective series Karamchand and the feature film Jalwa (1987).
