Dialogue of the day from The Lord of the Rings, ‘All we have to decide is what to do...’
Dialogue of the day: Frodo is sitting in the dark, deep under a mountain, carrying a burden he never asked for. Of everything he could say in that moment, what he says is what most of us would.

Dialogue of the day: In the film, the Fellowship is making its way through the Mines of Moria. Frodo, tired and scared, says he wishes none of this had happened. Gandalf does not tell him he is wrong to feel that way. He agrees with him, and then gives an answer that has stayed with viewers for over twenty years.
Dialogue of the day
“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo.
“So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” - Gandalf, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
What does the dialogue mean?
Frodo’s wish is a very human one. He did not choose this time or this task, and he would give anything to hand it to someone else. Gandalf does not wave that away. He says he feels the same, and so does everyone who lives through hard times. The comfort comes from being understood first.
Then comes the turn. When you are born, where you are born and what is happening around you are not yours to pick. What you do with the time you have is. Gandalf draws a line between what we cannot control and what we can, and tells Frodo to stop spending his strength on the first part.
That is why the line feels kind and not harsh. He is not telling Frodo to be brave or to stop being afraid. He is telling him the question has become smaller and more manageable. Not “why is this happening to me,” but “what will I do now.”
Most of us will never carry a ring through a mountain, but we all live through stretches we would never have chosen. A bad year, a difficult change, a time that feels heavier than it should. The line is a reminder that wishing things were different is natural, and that the next step is still ours to choose.
