Earthquake of magnitude 2.9 strikes Faridabad; mild tremors felt across Delhi-NCR
A magnitude 2.9 earthquake struck Haryana's Faridabad area at 6.33 pm on Thursday, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
A magnitude 2.9 earthquake struck Haryana's Faridabad area at 6.33 pm on Thursday, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
An earthquake of magnitude 2.9 struck Haryana's Faridabad on Thursday evening, with tremors reported in parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The earthquake occurred at 6.33 pm at a depth of five kilometres, with its epicentre located around six kilometres west-southwest of Faridabad, the NCS said.
Faridabad earthquake recorded at a depth of 5 km
According to the NCS, the earthquake was recorded at 6.33 pm on November 5, with its epicentre at latitude 28.386 degrees north and longitude 77.258 degrees east. The agency confirmed that the tremor originated at a depth of five kilometres below the ground.
Faridabad, which shares its borders with Delhi, is part of the NCR, a densely populated region comprising several cities across Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Consequently, seismic activity in the area can also be felt in neighbouring parts of the national capital region.
The NCS shared the details of the earthquake in a post on X, providing its magnitude, location, coordinates and depth.
Minor earthquakes recorded near Faridabad in recent days
Thursday's earthquake comes days after another minor tremor was recorded in Haryana's Palwal district. On October 30, the NCS registered an earthquake of magnitude 2.3 at a depth of five kilometres, with its epicentre located around 31 kilometres south-southwest of Faridabad. The tremor was recorded at 1.35 am.
Faridabad has also witnessed seismic activity in previous years. On October 15, 2023, the NCS recorded an earthquake of magnitude 3.1 in the district at a depth of 10 kilometres.
A stronger tremor was reported in Haryana in July 2025, when an earthquake of magnitude 4.4 struck Jhajjar district. Recorded at 9.04 am on July 10 at a depth of 10 kilometres, the earthquake was also felt in Delhi and several neighbouring cities, including Faridabad. According to the NCS, its epicentre was near Jhajjar, around 51 kilometres west of New Delhi.
Delhi-NCR falls in seismic Zone IV
The latest earthquake has once again drawn attention to the seismic vulnerability of the Delhi-NCR region. Delhi and several adjoining areas, including Faridabad, fall under seismic Zone IV in India's earthquake hazard zoning system, which identifies regions exposed to a relatively high level of seismic risk.
According to the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, the region's vulnerability is linked to geological faults and tectonic activity associated with the Himalayan belt.
However, the Zone IV classification indicates the potential for earthquake-related hazards and does not mean that every tremor will cause significant damage. The impact of an earthquake depends on several factors, including its magnitude, depth, distance from populated areas and the structural strength of buildings.
