Two migrant farm labourers from Madhya Pradesh were allegedly burnt alive after their vehicle was set on fire while they were asleep inside it, on the outskirts of Gundaran village in Lilia taluka of Gujarat's Amreli district. Police have detained two men and are investigating the incident as a double murder.
The two victims were Nitin Ramsingh Pachaya, 21, and a 16-year-old boy. Both were natives of Madhya Pradesh and worked as labourers in the area.
Their bodies were found inside the vehicle, a Toofan passenger vehicle, which was completely gutted in the fire.
Preliminary information suggests the two were sleeping inside when unidentified people set the vehicle on fire from outside.
According to a report, petrol was poured over it before it was lit.
Police have registered a case against Vinod Dodiyar and a relative of his, Raju, and both have been taken into custody for questioning.
Investigators believe a money dispute linked to the vehicle was behind the killing. Vinod had been buying the vehicle on instalments, and it was taken back from him about 10 days ago after payments were missed. Police said about Rs 30,000 was still due.
The officers' initial view is that anger over the repossession led to the attack.
Further investigation is on.
