The case has raised questions about how foetal and newborn remains are handled and about security and monitoring at MMCH, where stray animals can enter the premises.

A stray dog seen roaming with a newborn's body in its mouth at Medinirai Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) in Palamu district has led to an FIR against 12 people, including doctors. The incident came to light on Tuesday, October 27, when a man who had come to the hospital for treatment spotted the dog and alerted the hospital administration and the police outpost on the premises.

A video of the dog then spread widely online. Palamu Deputy Commissioner Dilip Pratap Singh Shekhawat and Superintendent of Police Kapil Chaudhary visited the campus, searched areas including the post-mortem room, and ordered a review of CCTV footage.

The footage led investigators to a private hospital next to the medical college.

Officials say the infant was born there, and that two women were seen on camera leaving the body on the campus early on Tuesday morning and going back to the private hospital shortly afterwards.

The district administration sealed Uttam Hospital and Nipun Ultrasound Centre late on Tuesday night.

An FIR has been registered on Wednesday against 12 people.

They include the private hospital's operator, doctors, an operation theatre technician and a former doctor of the medical college.

The case has raised questions about how foetal and newborn remains are handled and about security and monitoring at MMCH, where stray animals can enter the premises.

The authorities are continuing their investigation into how the newborn died and why the body was left on the campus. The people named in the FIR have not been found guilty of anything at this stage.
