India's has made significant progress in its solar power production in recent years. The credit for this massive growth in this sector goes to government policies and support to people and related businesses. At the end of the August 2026, India had 168.04 GW of installed solar capacity, which also include nearly 124 GW of ground-mounted projects. And another 17.78 GW was added in the first five months of the current financial year.
As the fleet of existing solar plants grows in the country, the maintenance and monitoring of these installations is emerging as a major challenge for developers and suppliers. Businesses associated with the industry are enhancing their portfolios to meet the emerging demand of high quality of service and maintenance needed to keep the existing installations running at top of their capacities. In a portfolio update in this direction, WattPower, in September this year, introduced WP-506KTL, a grid-forming string inverter.
While describing the crucial role of WP-506KTL in this direction, Divya Prakash Choraria, Managing Director of WattPower Systems, said the string inverter is a major move in shift from building solar power capacity to sustaining it. He said suppliers have a bigger role to play in how these plants perform long after they are commissioned.
A larger installed base changes the industry’s job
Plants commissioned five years ago remain part of the system alongside the new projects added to the fleet in the existing cycle. So, the number of assets requiring service, diagnostics, spare parts and technical expertise continues to increase every year.
High quality spare parts, maintenance another challenge for the industry
As the installations of solar plants continue to grow every year, the service provide provider face a huge challenge of keeping a team of well qualified professionals, stronger monitoring systems and faster fault identification across the country.
Divya further added we must ensure that our service capacity grow to match the installed capacity. According to him, technical knowledge, wider coverage and operating data have become part of the infrastructure supporting solar growth.
As India's solar story grows deeper and older, supplier also need to enhance their quality of products to match the industry requirements. The factors like the product performance,
remote diagnostics, access to technical teams and availability of replacement parts will influence the experience after the purchase order has been completed. In view of India's diverse weather conditions add to the challenge of maintaining high quality of products as the equipment might have to face high temperatures, dust, humidity and other changing seasonal conditions.
WattPower’s portfolio has been expanded to meet the growing industry needs. Now it includes equipment like utility-scale inverters, battery energy storage, plant monitoring and control systems.
India is connecting large inverter-based renewable generation in many areas. This increases the importance of voltage behaviour, frequency response, fault ride-through and system strength when selecting equipment for large projects.
Grid behaviour is becoming part of the equipment conversation
Disruption at Khavda renewable energy complex on May 13, 2026 led to a generation loss of 8,963 MW, according to Renewable Watch, citing GRID-INDIA. The report also cited low short-circuit as the complex. So, not only plants, the grids' maintenance is equally important. The WP-506KTL is one example in this direction. It uses a 1,000 V AC design with a stated maximum efficiency of 99.1%, and WattPower says its grid-forming capability is built to support the grid-code requirements.
India is continuing to make big leaps in the field of solar power generations. Every new plant is another step towards India's success story of renewable energy generation. While we continue to add new plant, the future will depend on efficiently we manage to maintain this momentum.
