The trade market ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 retention deadline has begun heating up, with five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) reportedly exploring the possibility of acquiring explosive England all-rounder Liam Livingstone from Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are actively exploring trade possibilities to acquire England’s explosive all-rounder Liam Livingstone from Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season.

As per a Cricbuzz report, the five-time champions CSK are assessing potential squad reinforcements and have set their sights on Livingstone for the upcoming IPL season.

Key Highlights Of The Developing Trade

Heavy Price Tag: Sunrisers Hyderabad secured Livingstone for a hefty Rs 13 crore at the auction ahead of the 2026 season. Any potential trade move would involve substantial financial maneuvering or an equivalent high-profile player swap.

Limited Game Time in 2026: Livingstone endured a quiet campaign in IPL 2026, featuring in just two matches for the SRH and managing 15 runs before spending the remainder of the season on the bench.

Multiple Suitors: Apart from CSK at least one prominent north Indian franchise has also expressed interest in the English all-rounder.

SRH's Stand: The Sunrisers Hyderabad management is yet to make a final call on whether to sanction the trade, release the player back into the auction pool, or retain him as part of their tactical setup.

Possible Swap Involving Khaleel Ahmed

As per the Cricbuzz report, some sources say that CSK could offer left-arm Indian pacer Khaleel Ahmed as part of a swap. However, this has been met with caution.

SRH recently acquired veteran left-arm seamer T Natarajan in a separate trade, which may reduce the appeal of bringing in another similar bowler. Sources noted that any potential deal could involve an additional CSK player beyond Khaleel.

Livingstone's IPL Trajectory

Year/Team                                Notable Event/Price

2019 (RR)                    IPL debut with Rajasthan Royals (Rs 50 lakh)

2022-2024 (PBKS)      Major auction breakout, bought by Punjab Kings for Rs 11.5 crore

2025 (RCB)                 Acquired by Royal Challengers Bengaluru for Rs 8.75 crore

2026 (SRH)                Signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 13 crore

Why Livingstone Fits CSK’s Blueprint

Chennai Super Kings have historically valued multifaceted spin-bowling all-rounders who thrive in middle-overs management, particularly under the distinctive pitch conditions at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Dual-Spin Capability: Livingstone's rare ability to bowl both leg-break to right-handers and off-break to left-handers gives any fielding captain extreme tactical flexibility on turning Chepauk tracks.

Power in the Middle Order: CSK has sought explosive hitters capable of dismantling spin through overs 7 to 15, an area where Livingstone's career T20 strike rate of over 145 provides a significant upside.

Overseas Flexibility: With transitions occurring across several senior core members, securing a proven match-winner in the power-hitting department fits into head coach Stephen Fleming's aggressive blueprint.

Current Status

Neither Sunrisers Hyderabad nor Chennai Super Kings has officially signed off on the transfer.

The decision remains in SRH’s court, as the team management weighs whether to retain Livingstone as a match-winning asset, clear out Rs 13 crore in purse space, or execute an advantageous swap before the deadline closes.
